Three years after their debut album *Le Retour*, Ultramoule is back in full force with *Gros Gâteau*. A dominant—yet obviously not overpowering—sound, still built on distorted strings and analog drum machine sounds. But Ultramoule goes further. Each track has a different flavor. This album is the wish you make before blowing out the candles on your birthday cake; it’s the militant and joyful celebration of the desired end of patriarchy. Each song addresses a political perspective that is both intimate and collective. Sprinkled with a healthy dose of humor and intentionally danceable, Gros Gâteau is nonetheless serious. This album aims to be disruptive in both form and content, seeking to break with dominant models in sound, lyrics, and approach. Musically speaking, this hard-to-categorize album follows a clear path of orchestral techno-punk rap. There are plenty of strings, and harmony takes center stage in many tracks. The raw texture of the analog sounds from Elektron’s Analog Rytm MK2 blends with a multitude of samples and carefully selected ambient sounds—drawn from their personal field recording library—to give the entire body of work greater coherence between form and content. The lyrics are sung, rapped, whispered, screamed, and harmonized. There’s something for everyone; Gros Gâteau aims to be original and diverse enough to be inclusive.
