THE MAYTONES
The Maytones, aka The Mighty Maytones, was a duo comprising Vernon Buckley and Gladstone Grant from May Pen, Jamaica, hence the group name “May” Tones. They recorded many singles with local May Pen producer Alvin Ranglin on GG’s Records. Initially Ranglin was a radio and television engineer who has his own sound system called “GG”. By the mid 1960s he started to produce records for his own labels: Hit, GG's Records, Typhoon and featuring his studio band the G.G. Allstars.
The Maytones wrote their own songs. They started recording in 1968 on GG’s Records and their first single was a hit with “Cold Up” om the A side and the cult anthem “Loving Reggay” on the flip. Many great tracks followed such as Funny Man, Billy Goat, Barrabus, Botheration, Everyday Is Like a Holliday etc… along with a flow of sentimental songs before finally switching to Roots Reggae. They disbanded in 1980 when Buckley migrated to Canada.
