It is safe to say the Mahotella Queens hold a unique position in music history. Initially, the Queens were simply the latest in a long line of ‘vocal jive’ girl groups, each riding the waves of the last one. But fortunately, a number of vital elements soon coalesced to creat a trendsetting new sound.

Meet The Mahotella Queens, the 1966 album that collects together several of the Wueens easiest hit single releases (all originally issues on 78s between 1964 and 1966), provides a rare glimpse at the the formative sound of the ensemble that would become South Africa’s most popular ‘mbaqanga’ vocal group of the mid-late 1960s period.
