Special Zip emerges with an EP that suggests he knows a thing or two about storytelling electronic grooves, opening with a melancholic intro of philosophical keys that gives way to something altogether more restless. The Toki Fuko Remembrance Mix is laidback dub awash with swirling chords lost in grainy open space. 'Anaerobic' blends progressive energy and psychotropic dub with a kinky groove that is reserved but ready for fun. 'Grain Conversion' shuts down more supple underlapping rhythms and synths that stumble over one another. The conceptual thread of the EP says that Dr. Caligari, the deranged genius and former lecturer in Experimental Phonetics, conducts sonic experiments that dissolve bodies and dimensions. The music does the same.
