Following a series of VA EPs, Broken District releases its first mini LP: “South Side” by Sofatalk. The collaboration between the label and the Italian artist feels natural, as they share a mutual vision of music, a nifty blend of jazz and soul-influenced electronic music landscape. Throughout the 6 tracks of “South Side”, SofaTalk explores and twists jazz, broken beat, house music and funk, resulting in the most accomplished work to date for the producer, but also for the label.
SofaTalk is Piero Paolinelli solo project, a melting pot of genres packaged under contemporary aesthetics. Piero wears many hats, from funky house selector, to owner of Cognitiva Records and musician. As a producer, he previously released several EPs on labels such as Omena, YAM, Banoffee Pies, and now lands on the Broken District soil for this mini LP.
“South Side” opens with the eponymous track, a funky and jazzy production carried by a bubbly bassline. Marcus Horndt on the electric piano finishes the job with his addictive groovy keys, leading the listeners throughout this perfect introduction. Serious business arrives on “Rhodes Royce”, starting with a good old 4-on-the-floor rhythm and acid notes. Don’t get duped though, swing is still here with the brilliant work of Horndt again on the Rhodes… This is pure acid jazz style and a clear standout of the EP for the house heads with a jazzy heart.
SofaTalk closes the A-side with “No Frills”, a broken beat/nu jazz production with live recorded drums. Probably one of the most complex and beautiful work from the producer. He keeps the groove alive on the flipside with “Ella”, where he sends us into the sweaty, steamy warm atmosphere of modern Louisiana blues.
Sit back, relax for a few minutes, but get ready to dance on the next track. “Raw Ivy” brings back the four-on-the-floor pattern and offers a twisted, modern take on funk. One of the highlights for the crate diggers in search of odd anthems for the club. Sunsetting the EP, “Play With Words” is that deep house track that brings back good memories and dive your mind in a peaceful place.
