Rolling Stone Magazineās pick of the week āThe Reckless Oneā is Samantha Martin & Delta Sugarās third album to date.
The follow up to 2018ās Juno-nominated āRun To Meā, āThe Reckless Oneā represents another massive step forward for Samantha Martin as a songwriter,Ā singer, arranger and band leader. Eleven of the albumās twelve songs were eitherĀ co-written or solely composed by the multi-talented, multi-faceted artist.Ā The one non-original, a funk infused cover of Bob Dylanās āMeet Me in theĀ Morning,ā fuses Dylanās lyric in a cataclysmic clash with the sensibilities of theĀ Meters and the hurricane force of Howlinā Wolf and Tina Turner at their rawest.Ā It simply has to be heard to be believed.
Produced by Darcy Yates and Renan Yildizdogan, āThe Reckless Oneā demonstrably builds on the strengths of Samantha Martin and Delta Sugarās last album. Martinās lyrics, set to a panoply of intoxicating, ear worm melodies, tend to focus on the vicissitudes of love: desire, disappointment and, when everythingĀ works out, emotional and sexual satisfaction.
The albumās twelve tracks cover a lot of ground, including 12/8 gospel infused soul ballads such as āIāve Got a Feelingā and āBetter to Have Never,ā funk inflectedĀ tracks like āLove is All Around,ā stomping four-on-the-floor dance numbersĀ epitomized by āDonāt Have To Beā and the Wall of Sound influenced āSacrifice.ā
Over the course of the album the discerning listener will detect a panoply of influences ranging from Mavis Staples, Sharon Jones and Otis Redding to BookerĀ T. and the MGās and the Memphis Horns. One track, āAll That I Am,ā is evenĀ slightly reminiscent of early 70s Emotions.
