hot on location in London, Jerusalem, and Tel Aviv, Diamonds starred Richard Roundtree—famous for his role as hard-boiled private investigator Shaft—and Robert Shaw—who played the role of shark hunter Quint in Spielberg's Jaws. At first glance it appears to be a straight forward caper involving a meticulously planned and executed raid on the Tel Aviv Diamond Exchange. However, things are not as they seem as an intense sibling rivalry underlies the insatiable hunger for wealth...
Director-producer Menahem Golan telephoned for Roy Budd to fly from London to Tel Aviv to see a roughly assembled hour of the film and to absorb the film’s setting and feeling. The stars then came to London to complete shooting, and Roy began writing the score. It was in the recording studios that Golan and Jack Fishman first heard the main theme. “What a fabulous song it would make!” was Golan's instant reaction; ‘‘If it had words, and someone to sing them, I’d put them in the film.’’ As it turned out, The Three Degrees happened to be in London at the time and the result? Another Roy Budd classic, full of gems.
