Digging through old DAT tapes for lost material is always a gamble, but Obelix's unreleased mid-90s recordings prove well worth the effort. Richard George and Corine Trembath were working right at that intersection of early house and techno, and these tracks carry raw energy that defines the era, namely rolling 909s, tightly wound 303 acid lines and plenty of dusty analogue roughness. 'House' is deliciously warm and cosy, with swirling chords adding atmosphere to the groove, while the B-side has two versions of the same jam, one more driving and the other heads down for introspective sessions. This is UK underground dance music at its most unfiltered and it is utterly timeless and brilliantly functional all these decades
