There’s some room for speculation; for dipping your finger and tasting before eating the rest of the cake, for training yourself; for white glove testing; for exploring one’s limits as if it were your favourite sport; for rehearsing (“Ensayo”). Getting the maximum score in a rugby match also really goes along the lines of Nueva Vulcano: getting up lush and fast (“frondoso y rápido”) while enjoying the triumph of small things, writing speeches and creating non damaging works of art about it, which rise above and beyond (“más allá de un sobreático”).
The Barcelona trio has tried to re-meet each other before using each other in the making of their new album. In Ensayo (finally) there are fewer love songs, and all because the albums current mood and energy represent the more-than-three-decades-long affection, complementarity and embracement of Artur Estrada, Wences Aparicio and Albert Guàrdia. That’s the sport they’ve played for almost a year: to rediscover each other just like in old days.
Artur and Wences literally picked up Albert from Sants train station and from the airport, for ten weekends, between February 2019 and January 2020. From there, they drove, parked and rehearsed as if it were a full-time job, like rock’n’roll workmen in incognito overalls in the basement of Albert’s parents’ house in Castellar del Vallès. This process of coexistence, discipline, affection and pizza nights watching videos from The Jam, El Último de la Fila, Big Thief, Hot Snakes, King Krule, The Cure, AC/DC, Chavez, Phleg Camp, Seam, The Van Pelt or Jawbreaker, among others; ended in two final rehearsals with the new songs (“Ensayos”) at sala VOL, Barcelona, two days before locking themselves up to record the album.
By heart, without any notes, with a knife between their teeth and their best songbook to date, on February 24th, Nueva Vulcano went to Cal Pau studio in Sant Pere Molanta, in Baix Penedés, with Santi García, a good collection of natural wines, a barbecue and friends around all day. A week later they finished the album arrangements at Ultramarinos Costa Brava studio in Sant Feliu de Guíxols with Marc Clos’s magic (vibraphone, percussion and mellotron), just a few days before we fell into this pandemic’s global loophole.
The songs in Ensayo are upfront and sarcastic, immediate and experimental, sumptuous and spontaneous. They approach a curious questioning of postmodern humanism without even wanting to. They are not meant to solve your problems nor to create problems for your solutions. They don’t care about being out of place or in the right place at the right time: they rise above and beyond.
