1st pressing of Omni sold out. Solid numbers on Spotify. - KEXP review. Another review. - Hush Hush's most successful release in its 150+ deep catalogue. Seattle electronic duo NAVVI are set to unveil their most captivating and fully realized work with their debut album Omni, coming out May 27thvia Hush Hush Records. The collaborative vision of vocalist Kristin Henry and producer Brad Boettger, NAVVI’s music carries an instantly magnetic presence. First emerging with their debut single in 2013, their confident take on brooding, propulsive, darkly-lit synth-pop has been on display over a steady string of self-released singles, an inclusion on a compilation curated by the French label Kitsuné, as well as their excellent 2014 EP, II. Press outlets such as NME, Brooklyn Vegan, Impose, Line of Best Fit, and Jay-Z’s Life+Times have all been quick to praise their alluring sound, and they’ve been handpicked by the Capitol Hill Block Party and KEXP to perform on stages all across Seattle. All of these efforts now lead to the strongest and most expansive statement in their young career, Omni. Album opener “Simpatico” wastes no time showcasing NAVVI’s distinctively hypnotic sound, as the duo’s crisp beats, driving rhythms, evocative guitars, and nocturnal atmospheres perfectly set the stage for Kristin’s intoxicating vocals to warmly float above the mix. “Close” quickly provides further evidence of NAVVI’s talent for crafting immediately engaging experimental pop, using a sighing, slightly eerie vocal sample to propel the song into an ideal late-night driving anthem. Following this sharp 1-2 punch is “Polychrome,” a standout track previously released as a single alongside “In Gold” in late 2015. Both singles exude a coy swagger that merely hinted at the heights found on Omni, with each track fitting in comfortably amongst the album’s extended set. The interstitial interlude “Interstate” leads calmly into “What Reason Do We Need?” an inquisitive slow-motion R&B song that reduces the tempo to illuminate Brad’s spacious production and Kristin’s yearning melodies. “Follow You” finds Brad surprisingly contributing his own talkbox vocals, adding an enhanced nostalgic touch to the song’s strong emotional pull. “Another Phase” and “Sol” follow suit and unleash back-to-back infectious electronic-pop jams highlighted by the duo’s trademark dynamic flair. Closing track “From the End and Start” appropriately wraps up the beautiful fever-dream of Omni, with the duo once again cutting the tempo in half for an exceptionally arresting closer that sways seductively until its final impassioned breath. A stunning, filler-free debut album that makes good on the promise of their initial high-quality self-released singles, Omni is yet another confident step forward for NAVVI. A dedicated DIY band that has largely done everything in a self-produced, self-managed, and self-designed fashion, this marks the first official label release for NAVVI. The album has found a fitting home on Hush Hush Records, an independent DIYlabel run and curated by KEXP DJ Alex Ruder that’s dedicated to an emotional, cinematic, and intimate sound.
