American-British soul singer Nate James turns up in the mid-2000s with a voice that sounds almost over-trained, like he's spent years sanding it down until nothing sticks out. You hear the reference points straight away - American r&b, bits of 70s soul - but they sit on him a little too neatly, like clothes bought for an interview. 'Set The Tone' runs on a tight groove, everything clipped and in place, his vocal landing exactly where you expect it to. It's impressive for a moment, then you start waiting for it to slip. The Jim Sharp remix does more with it, pulls the drums forward, gives the thing some pressure. Suddenly it breathes a bit.
