Ryan Ambridge steps out from the shadows of his darker synth work with Linea Aspera and Lust Pattern for something warmer under the Modern Apartments name. Light on Water leans into cosmic, kosmische synth workouts, and it's clearly shaped by his day job working as a film projectionist, and you can hear that flickering, analogue texture running through the whole thing. There's still an edge to it though: old rhythm box beats and post-punk angles keep cutting into the looser, more colourful stuff, that tension between rigid and free runs right through opener 'Completely.' The title track drifts further still, away into properly sun-bleached territory to make for some serious late-summer listening.
