Lovers, Mickey Newbury’s 1975 album and his final release for Elektra, is back on CD and vinyl for the first time in decades. Transferred from the original master tapes and remastered, the album is one of Newbury’s most versatile. Weaving through country, blues, jazz and folk, the Chip Young–produced record finds Newbury at the height of his songwriting powers. A thematically heavy album that deals with pain, pessimism and heartbreak, Lovers sees Newbury navigate weighty territory with the grace and restraint that defined his best work. Rather than wallowing, he lets the songs breathe. Nearly five decades on, Lovers stands as a quiet high point in the catalog of one of American music’s most revered and overlooked songwriters
