I Came to Hear the Music, Mickey Newbury’s 1974 album and his fourth release for Elektra, is back on CD and vinyl for the first time in decades. Transferred from the original master tapes and remastered, the album captures Newbury at his most adventurous. Recorded with producer Chip Young at his Young ‘Un Sound studio outside Murfreesboro, Tennessee, the record moves easily between hushed ballads and loose, playful arrangements, stitched together with the atmospheric touches that set Newbury apart from his Nashville peers. Every song is his own, and the writing is as sharp as anything in his catalog, with songs later taken up by Don Gibson, Glenn Barber and Will Oldham. Where so much of his work leans toward the melancholy, I Came to Hear the Music finds room for warmth and a little light. Nearly five decades on, it remains a vital chapter from one of American music’s most revered and overlooked songwriters.
