The MEDIÆVAL BÆBES release their first in a series of themed albums starting with “Tales Of Love And Loss” a remastered new compilation album including a live previously unreleased track recorded at Gloucester Cathedral. “Tales of Love and Loss” is a collection of songs that explore the enduring themes found in the love poetry and literature of the Middle Ages and beyond. As we all know too well, love stories do not always have happy endings; just because one pursues another relentlessly does not guarantee their surrender, thus stories of unrequited love and disillusionment were prevalent in the Mediaeval period. The rules of courtly love could give women unprecedented powers over men and perhaps some enjoyed them too much. Challenges could be set which would encourage competitiveness and jealousy amongst suitors. Games could be played that would only prolong their inevitable pain. In All For Love Of One, rejection leaves a lover so wretched it is though he were made destitute by love, and literally abandoned to the wilds. Slay Me Suddenly, taken from Chaucer’s Three Roundels of Love, describes a woman who’s awareness of her own allure has made her cruel and disdainful - flashing a look that can cut to the core. And in Quan Vey La Lauzeta self-pity turns to cynicism as the poet concludes all women are the same - one as heartless as another. However, some protagonists are so smitten that they cannot bring blame on the object of their desire. In Trovammi Amor a woman’s eyes are the window to her heart, but also the doorway to her lover’s tears. Yet he cannot accuse her of malice, since her glances are merely blows unwittingly bestowed, and he - the willing victim. An indulgence in misery is the theme of Foweles In The Frith too - the perfect harmony of nature can bring no comfort when sorrow is one’s chosen companion. And yet, what is life without the pursuit of love? In a lesser known verse of Scarborough Fayre we are reminded that love imposes impossible tasks, but not more than any heart asks.
