Smooth Architecture is in many ways an odd title, but a fitting one. Kyle Hall has long been Detroit's house golden boy and though the music he makes is infused with aching soul and seductive pads, his drums are pretty much always roughed up, dusty, and frayed around the edges. That is true again of all four cuts are, starting with 'Venus Deep' with its cosmic melodies circling around rugged analogue drums. 'Velour Focus' (83 West remix) has a shuffle and skip to it that is more late-night, and the sombre chords reflect that, while the original version is deeper and more pensive. 'Smooth Architecture' then bumps along nicely with twitchy acid stabs and plenty of analogue hiss. More timeless gold from Hall.
