Evan Short, a Kiwi pioneer of the DnB movement with 23 years of production under his belt, having once been a founding member of Concord Dawn, is now working under his new moniker, Kiljoy. Producing a tech-step jungle-edged sound that he loves with a passion. Following up from his well-received releases “Ghosts of Old” on the Shadows LP project and the Enki remix EP collab with Kiat on Function Records, Kiljoy returns to deliver his highly anticipated “Heart Of A Lion” EP.
Kicking things off with “Depth Charge”, it’s beautifully panned-out sonic chords effortlessly move through rhythmic stabs that ignite a classic series of vocal sample licks, unleashing a straight-up no holds barred adrenaline rush of brutal breaks and seismic basslines.
The title track “Heart of a Lion” serves up a tasty slice of amen-fused heavyweight riddims with scattered beats, eerie atmospherics, and skanking sub-bass... a direct signal to all lovers of jungle.
“Stick Em Up" is full on rolling futuristic b-boy flavours and undertones that flip break patterns deep amongst the funked-out hazardous tribal frequencies. “Space Bells” melodic sonic keys gently tease techy beats seamlessly wrapped in an apocalyptic bassline, with intrinsically placed vocal snippets powering direct breaks, leading you into territories unknown!
