We need to talk about Kaval. The French UK Funky evolutionist is next up on Time is Now with his ‘Hack Dem Up’ EP and he has been making sick evolutions of UK Funky for a minute, repurposing and refreshing the sound all over the place. Dropping heat on killer UK Funky/Amapiano/Gqom imprint Club Djembe, Hardcore Continuum accelerators Sneaker Social Club, IPC & Main Phase’s UKG focused ATW Records & Parisian Hip-Hop/Bass/Club label Nowadays.

Dive into this EP and deeper into Kaval’s catalogue and you will find Dembow, Techno, Grime, Miami Bass, 3step, Dub, Amapiano, Baltimore Club and more, all fused into UK Funky.

But I think we are past this being killer 2nd wave UK Funky.... I think what Kaval is producing now is becoming something else, his sound. For me he is writing soundsystem white papers with every session and every riddim feels like a blueprint for a new hybrid club sound. Kaval is on some proper limitless shit.

This EP is a case in point, four tracks cooked specifically for the club that move - with Kaval’s trademark UK Funky swagger and bounce - through grime, techno and dembow rhythmics signposting evolutions left and right along the way…

Run the Tracks:

Hack Dem Up: Ingredients: Propulsive four to the floor riddim, UK Funky snare patterns, Polyrhythmic rave stabs, Infectious Dewbow vocal, Bass and more Bass….but Method: don’t even try…. Big tune.

Shambala: This is Kaval’s playful territory, bleeps, sweeps, drill vocal samples and safari sounds. As if UK Funky soundtracked a Crash Bandicoot game. Drum focused and rhythm forward.

Grime Era: Some of the best Grime instrumental refixes have come in the form of UK funky edits. This is a proper stepper complete with Pulse X feels, whipcracks and sirens.

Caution: Utopian Techno palette loaded into the bones of a dubbed out UK Funky session. Heavy on the bounce but so much heavier on the subs.
