Many of you will know JOHNY BROWN as the long-time leader of BAND OF HOLY JOY, whose quasi-industrial beginnings rapidly developed into ragged-but-beautiful glory to near chart hits and then a string of marvelous lengthy epics questioning the nature of everything under the sun. Gut Feels captures a little of all of that, but it's some beguiling musing on the glorious and lost early days of punk, youthful discovery and later attempts to recapture that magic. Just last night - by coincidence - David Lance Callahan told us about how John used to poke around Newcastle as a 12-year-old buying up objets-de-punk as early as the first Sex Pistols 7"! Where does that magic go? is as good a question as any for many of us, and more than a few of us can relate in some way to lyrics such as: "We listened to the Raincoats in our raincoats, And we listened to the Passions too, But mostly we were waiting for the Fall, We were always waiting for the Fall. By winter we were earring bum freezer jackets and end of pier soiled white drill shorts as we listened to the great white funk of A Certain Ratio and made uncertain adjustments to our lives . . ." Ten haunting new songs from Johny, who perceives this project as an embryo of something new coming soon. There's an early-BOHJ tone to some of this, and Johny's collated a beautiful full-colour booklet of text, dialogue, lyrics and street photography to go along with it all.
