The Bossa Nova style, which Joao Gilberto introduced in 1957, created a sensation in the musical circles of Rio's Zona Sul arts district (South Zone) with aspiring young guitarists eagerly attempting to imitate it. First heard on record in 1958 in a recording of "Chega de Saudade", a song by Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes, the genre was picked by American musicians and popularised throughout the world, most notably by the albums of Stan Getz and Charley Byrd ('Desafnado', 'Jazz Samba'' etc).

Gilberto had frst accompanied singer Elizeth Cardoso as her guitarist in a recording of this song ("Chega de Saudade), shortly after which Gilberto recorded his own boss nova style version of the song for his debut single. That and the following 'Chega de Saudade' LP (1959) launched Gilberto's international career and the Bossa Nova worldwide craze.
