Back on Peak Oil for a second time, Kirill Vasin aka Hoavi ventures somewhere unexpected with Architectonics, drawing on the Indonesian gamelan to reshape his sound. Over three and a half years this veteran Russian rebuilt his process from the ground up, harvesting percussive hits with a phone and contact mic, tapping tables, railings and glasses to forge a richly textured palette. Two full versions were scrapped before the final form emerged. Traces of 2021's Invariant album remain in the sci fi atmospheres and intricate rhythms but this record feels more tactile and exploratory with minimalist repetition, dub weight and shifting tonalities all adding up to a patient work.
