Some records have intriguing mythology and this is one of them. 'She's A Male' by Hasenbergsteige has no label, no catalogue trail worth speaking of, and a name lifted from a steep, upscale street in Stuttgart that has nothing obviously to do with Italy. It was pressed privately in 1984 for DJs at clubs like Baia degli Angeli and is the kind of anonymous, synth-heavy oddity that built Italo-disco's underground. It's well spenny on second-hand markets, so this reissue is welcome. The original has a swirling Balearic charm and David Bowie-style vocal over the staggered rhythm, and various versions dial up the dub, the funky bass and introduce a more cosmic vocoder.
