The November 26, 1983, Genesis concert at the Spectrum in Philadelphia stands as one of the most celebrated performances of the band’s Mama tour. This show was the middle night of three consecutive concerts at the venue, taking place on November 25th, 26th, and 27th. The Mama tour supported Genesis’s self-titled thirteenth album and ultimately comprised seventy-three shows across the United States and Canada, beginning on November 6th in Normal, Illinois, before concluding with five dates in Birmingham, England in late February 1984.
The November 27th concert, which was recorded for FM Radio, these Philadelphia recordings have become definitive statements of the Mama tour era. The fans often citing the second Philadelphia night as one of the finest Genesis performances ever.
What makes the November 26th performance particularly significant is that it too was also professionally recorded for radio broadcast, resulting in exceptional sound quality that has made it one of the best-documented shows of the entire tour.
This releasee is a mixture of all three nights to ensure the purchaser gets the absolute best of the best performances along with full remastered sound specifically for this vinyl edition.
The setlist featured a mix of material from the new Genesis album alongside progressive classics form earlier in their career. Opening powerfully with “Dodo/Lurker” and including tracks like “Abacab,” “That’s All,” “Mama,” and “Home by the Sea.” The band also performed an elaborate medley during “In the Cage” that incorporated sections of “Cinema Show,” “In That Quiet Earth,” and “Slippermen,” showcasing their progressive rock roots. Guitarist Daryl Stuermer delivered notably Hackett-influenced solos throughout the evening, particularly during these classic pieces.
During the final encore of “Turn It On Again,” Phil Collins thanked the Philadelphia crowd for making the past three days outstanding for the band, incorporating a medley that included snippets of cover songs such as “Everybody Needs Somebody,” “Satisfaction,” “The Last Time,” The kinks, “All Day and All of the Night,” and Wilson Pickets, “In The Midnight Hour.”
Collins also humorously claimed Philadelphia as his hometown at each tour stop, a running joke throughout the tour. The excellent recording quality and the band’s energetic performances at the Spectrum have ensured its place as a treasured recording among Genesis fans and collectors alike and now released on high quality vinyl, along with specially commissioned artwork, this release is sure to please not just casual fans, but the die-hard fans too.
