US deep house don Fred P and Max Ulis don't so much collaborate as collide here as two distinct underground heads meet somewhere perfectly in between hypnosis and momentum. 'Pathways of Sound' trades any shiny production polish for atmospheric pressure: Fred P's reworks of 'Highest Discovery' and 'Moondancer' stretch deep house into something typically patient and nocturnal, while Ulis answers with low-end that really lands heavy. 'The Mantra' featuring Sergio SP is the EP's beating heart in that it is ritualistic and immersive. This is functional, forward-leaning club music but engineered for detailed systems and dancers who like to engage heads as much as heel.
