Testpattern is a new album of old music that marks the wonderful Dark Entries label's first step into vintage Japanese electronics. Recorded in 1984 by Masao Hiruma who is formerly of the synth outfit from which this album takes its name, and French-American poet-vocalist Evelyne Bennu, these 17 tracks were captured in Hiruma's home studio but never released until now. Building on the refined synthpop of 1982's Apres-Midi, the album drifts from Hosono-inspired melodies to oddball DIY experiments on the standout 'Alien Go Home' and a skewed 'Singin' in the Rain'. Bennu's vocals shift from New Wave cool to chanson theatrics, which unifies this wonderful collection. This CD version comes with a fold-out poster, lyrics and liner notes.
