Legendary Rockpalast performance on June 1, 1984, at the Philipshalle in Dusseldorf: a historic live recording from Chalice's early European career - Jamaican reggae legends live: Chalice is one of the defining bands of the golden era of Jamaican reggae : rare historical record: the performance captures Chalice during a crucial phase of their international career - authentic '80s reggae: not a reconstructed sound, but a raw live experience from the genre's heyday electrifying stage energy: Even back then, Chalice captivated audiences with dynamic, high-energy performances and catchy songs From "Children In Exile" to "Can't Dub": The performance documents the band during the phase of their international breakthrough - Its historical significance stems from the deaths of four former founding members; the recording serves as a documentary and a piece of Jamaican music history.

Summertime is reggae time - that's what the surviving members of the legendary Jamaican reggae band Chalice thought in July 2026. Without further ado, they decided to preserve their memories of a very special milestone in the band's history for posterity: their legendary performance as part of the WDR Rockpalast concert series, during which they shared the stage with reggae icon Jimmy Cliff at the Philipshalle in Dusseldorf (Germany).

The seven musicians from St. Mary had already achieved their international breakthrough with their second album, "Standard Procedure," and the hit single "Can't Dub." Following their first performance at the renowned Reggae Sunsplash in 1983 in Montego Bay, Jamaica, Chalice made their German debut on June 1, 1984, at the WDR Rockpalast in Dusseldorf's Philipshalle. For the band, this evening became a major milestone in their European career. Before a sold-out house, Chalice thrilled the audience with their energetic performance and their unmistakable reggae sound--as a band that was still largely unknown in Germany at the time, opening for Jimmy Cliff.

Chalice's mastermind, guitarist, and singer Wayne Armond recalls: "In 1984, we embarked on our very first European tour. We were signed to Ariola Records. After several very successful shows in Germany, we were invited to perform in Dusseldorf as part of the Rockpalast concert series, opening for reggae legend Jimmy Cliff. We played to a sold-out house and an audience that had never heard of Chalice before. But with our dynamic and energetic performance, as well as our catchy reggae songs, we took this wonderful audience by storm."

To this day, Chalice continues to bring its very own, unmistakable reggae sound to the world. Four of Chalice's founding members and longtime companions have since passed away. However, their musical legacy and their defining contribution to Chalice's unique sound remain unforgettable. The best proof of this is their performance at Rockpalast in 1984.
