Atheist is a death metal band hailing from Sarasota, Florida. Founded in 1984 by vocalist/guitarist Kelly Shaefer and drummer Steve Flynn, the band quickly made a name for themselves with their intricate and technical musicianship, blending together elements of death metal, jazz, and progressive rock.

Their 1991 debut album, "Piece of Time," is widely considered a classic of the genre, showcasing the band's virtuosic playing and complex song structures. Atheist continued to push the boundaries of death metal with their subsequent albums, "Unquestionable Presence" (1991) and "Elements" (1993), both of which received critical acclaim.

Despite disbanding in 1994, Atheist's legacy as innovators of technical death metal has continued to inspire generations of musicians. In 2006, the band reunited for a series of shows and released their fourth album, "Jupiter," in 2010.

Today, Atheist remains an influential and highly respected band in the death metal community, known for their unique blend of extreme technical proficiency and progressive musicality. Their once out of print classic albums are now available with re-worked packaging and liner notes from the band.
