'The Sun Does Shine' is a powerful musical work by Harvey Brough, with words by Justin Butcher, inspired by the autobiography Anthony Ray Hinton wrote about his long fght to prove his innocence

In June 1988, Hinton was convicted by an Alabama court of two murders he did not commit, in one of the most shockingly cynical miscarriages of justice in US history. He spent the next 28 years on Death Row, before all charges were dropped and he was released.

It is both a journey into the heart of darkness and an astonishing story of friendship, resilience and hope. It was frst performed at Hackney Empire, London with the approval of Hinton himself, who now campaigns for others betrayed by the criminal justice system.

The choir Vox Holloway's recording, under the direction of the composer was recorded in 2022. It features solo vocalists Wills Morgan, Christina Gill, Michael Henry and Clara Sanabras. Alongside leading musicians incuding guitarists Mike Outram and John Parricelli, violinist David le Page, pianist Liam Dunachie, bassist Tom Herbert and drummer Graham Instrall.

Harvey Brough and Wills Morgan have appeared on BBC Radio 3's In Tune. A podcast about the piece and about Anthony Ray Hinton was played in all prisons in the UK in 2024.
