Will Vinyl Live Forever?

09.16.2020

Of the most popular questions you will hear people ask about vinyl, ‘Isn’t vinyl dead?’ is quite possibly asked more often than all others combined. And the answer to that is, no, vinyl isn’t dead. In fact, vinyl recently experienced a resurgence which has sales of new vinyl albums topping that of compact discs in their heyday.

Incredible Listening Experience

For the vinyl faithful, we know that vinyl will live forever because it has a certain something that no other form of music media offers. With vinyl, you have to care for it, you have to store it properly, and you put up with those miniscule pops and hisses that we have all come to know and love. And, if you van do all that, you will be rewarded with an incredible listening experience that can only be surpassed by actually being in the recording studio with your favourite artist.

The 40’s And 50’s

Vinyl music has been popular on and off since the very first vinyl record was spun. It grew in popularity in the 1940’s, however, as the world celebrated the end of World War II. Then, with the introduction of rock and roll in the 1950’s, vinyl grew once again, this time into a giant that many thought couldn’t be tamed. They were right.

The 60’s, 70’s And Beyond

Right on through the 1960’s and 70’s, vinyl continued its steady growth as artists such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Doors created hit after hit. Then it happened. The 80’s club music scene began to carry vinyl album sales as cassette tapes took over. The 90’s was even more difficult for vinyl as compact discs became more and more popular. It seemed that vinyl was all but forgotten.

The dance music scene kept vinyl on life support until it saw its first big resurgence in the 2000’s. People wanted that familiar vinyl feel and sound and this created a new fan base for the music format. But it wasn’t until the 2010’s that vinyl began to grow almost as big as it was in the 60’s and 70’s. New fans, old fans, and those curious about the format purchased album after album and vinyl is still growing in popularity and sales to this day.
