Time Remembered

With their new duo, Mulo Francel and Tim Collins combine the rhythmic, mellow sound of vibraphone and the warm lyricism of the saxophone to create captivating soundscapes. The resulting foot tapping grooves and improvisational interplay are as sensitive as they are virtuosic. The two extraordinary artists have toured extensively throughout Europe and the United States with Mulo Francel’s band Quadro Nuevo. Tim Collins, from New York, is regarded as a master of the vibraphone. The Washington Post, for example, described him as a “musician of fire.” Mulo Francel has received multiple ECHO Awards and the German Jazz Award. The magazine Kulturnews once credited him with possessing “the most sensual saxophone tone in Europe.” Stylistically, the duo explores swinging jazz, impulses from Latin rhythms and the valse musette tradition, romantic ballads, and adventurous improvisations based on original compositions that also incorporate elements of neo-classicism and minimal music. The new pieces were composed especially for this album and are deeply shaped by personal emotions and experiences. Mulo Francel composed Sunshine Moment out of a blissful moment of peace in the middle of a grueling day, as well as The Wise, for which he found inspiration atop Mount Moses in the Sinai. Orsola’s Lullaby also tells a personal story: Tim Collins dedicated the piece to his grandmother Orsola, whose family emigrated from Naples to New York. Fittingly, the photoshoot for the album cover took place in Naples. “How Did We Get Here? is really the classic musician’s question,” Tim Collins says with a wink. “After endless tours, sometimes you wake up in the morning, stare at the hotel room ceiling — or out the window of the tour bus — and think exactly that.” On the title track, Mulo Francel can be heard performing virtuoso bass clarinet. A video was also created for the song, showing the two musicians in a wide variety of places: beneath the Brooklyn Bridge in New York, along a Mediterranean coastline, or deep in the Adirondack forests. “At some point, we ourselves no longer knew how we had actually gotten there with our instruments,” Collins remarked. “I actually struggle somewhat with the term ‘hero,’ because it can easily be misunderstood,” says Mulo Francel about his song Personal Hero. “I’m not interested in placing some cult figure on a pedestal. Rather, I believe that everyone can find guiding figures in life — perhaps someone from their own family, an artist, an athlete, or even a spiritually inspiring personality. In other words, a person one can look to for orientation and strength, especially in moments when one feels weighed down or confronted with problems.” Earlier compositions are also presented on the album with updated arrangements. The Quadro Nuevo classic Yorke’s Guitar, by pianist Chris Gall, appears here in a previously unheard duo version. In the traditional American folk song St. James Infirmary from New Orleans, Mulo Francel turns to the rarely played, deeply resonant contrabass clarinet, lending the piece a particularly haunting atmosphere. The LP version of the album remains entirely within the analog domain as an AAA recording. It was produced as a collaboration between GLM Music and the label “Jazz on Vinyl,” founded by mastering engineer Dominique Klatte. The high-quality microphone signals recorded in the studio were left completely natural, without any frequency or spatial processing. The result is an unusually direct, unvarnished listening experience with the intimacy of a living-room acoustic. The album will also be released on CD and via streaming services. Unlike the LP versions, these digital versions of the songs have been re-edited, mixed, and digitally mastered. They are also available in Dolby Atmos. In addition, they include three bonus tracks not found on the LP release.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0130/8714/6043/files/1_dab910d6-5c71-4a90-800a-1c9644a630c4.webp?v=1785341340
