The hypnotic track, “Comfortable,” made Duy think about “AI and cyborgs” and “souls disassociating from bodies.” “I kind of just freestyled until a theme started to swim up,” they said. For Hovvdy’s Martin, this was his rst time ever writing lyrics to accompany another artist’s work. “It was really exciting to hear [Ryan] meet me in the middle style-wise. There are many hidden gems in the production of ‘Waterfall,’” Martin muses. “Lyrically the song explores a parallel I’ve been feeling lately: the diculty of understanding and being understood and how sometimes that struggle almost mirrors the state of the planet. The ¬ve-song EP, capped with a cover of Casiotone for the Painfully Alone's stunning \"Natural Light,\" re ects this period of intensive growth and self-discovery. \"I wrote these songs while getting to know myself outside of people's perceived notions of who I was,\" says Tomberlin. \"I just started being like, What am I interested in? What do I want out of relationships and friendships? What am I looking for that I don't have in myself already?\"\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe rich vocal harmonies and guitar lines that made At Weddings so riveting still provide the EP's foundation, but new percussive backing and instrumental ourishes open the path forward for Tomberlin. After touring the US with Alex G and playing new songs for the band in their shared green room, Tomberlin reached out to Alex Giannascoli and bandmate Sam Acchione to produce the EP's four original tracks. She recorded her new songs in Giannascoli's Philadelphia apartment alongside Acchione and frequent collaborator Molly Germer. The eshed out sound lends a sense of urgency to tracks like \"Wasted,\" an uptempo romp across the kind of thorny relationship that withholds as much as it gives, and \"Sin,\" a song that applies reclaimed Christian imagery to an unorthodox romantic partnership. \"I don't mind sinning if it's with you,\" Tomberlin sings against washes of violin and brushed cymbals. \"Say a prayer\/Lay your hands on me\/I just wanna be clean.\"\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\"I wrote 'Sin' while living at my parents' home and exploring my queerness, but afraid to make it too obvious,\" Tomberlin says. \"It's de¬nitely using imagery that gets used against queer people, but making a joke out of it. That's a thing with queer people. We all use humor to deflect our pain.\"\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eTomberlin's ability to pan across the general disaster of human relationality and then zoom in on an eervescent moment of pure intimacy is one of her greatest strengths as a songwriter. Queer people get shuttered under the label of sin by the wider world, and yet despite that brand they steal moments of love and healing for themselves. Ricardo’s wife, Meg, was pregnant at the time but she said she didn’t mind thenoise that drifted up to the living room. It doesn’t have to be yours.”Lead track “Nobody Waits” is a song about patience, rejection, loneliness, love, depression, andacceptance. The possibility that we may never meet somebody who is willing to embrace everypart of us. The song posits that being loved is an impossible, Sisyphean task, akin to leavingsomething burning in the oven in a house where there is no entryway.“San Cristobal” is a song that was written almost a decade ago. It’s about escapism, traveling, andgoing long distances to try to leave yourself behind, only to nd another impossible task. Thisnew version was re-recorded with a band arrangement. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e“My voice had just begun changing fromtestosterone,” Mal says of the new version. “I had to relearn how to sing it. The album is set in Montreal and each song exists as a dot on a personal history map of the city where Levy grew up. Opening track “damn”, as a song of winter, kicks off the narrative with the events of a cursed New Year’s Eve party. Immediately this timeline becomes jumbled into a Proustian haziness. The listener is then led through the heat-stricken, brain fog of Summer song, “can’t stop me from dying” and then into the autumnal romanticism of “oranges” before returning back to New Year’s on “partner,” which Levy describes as “a woozy late-night taxi blues reflection on moments when timing can be so right, yet so wrong…”. These collected stories as a whole chart the unavoidable growth that comes with experience. “All is forgiven in time. All is forgotten in time.
