In the wake of releasing two full-length records in 2021 - We Are Always Alone and CHRISTFUCKER - they followed up 2022 with a year of relentless touring. In the middle of their frantic schedule, the band took time to craft the five new songs that would make up Devil Music with Viva Studios’ Matt Michel (Majority Rule) in Virginia. They then took their creative vision to the next level with Ben Greenberg (Uniform), by tracking alternate versions of each song with orchestral arrangements in place of the three piece’s standard instrumentation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn Devil Music, Portrayal of Guilt’s goal is to create a visceral listening experience. On either version of these songs, whether it be the a-side’s more familiar heaviness or the orchestral b-side takes, the band is determined to drag the listener with them through what \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003efeels like a reckoning. Lyrics on songs like the opener “One Last Taste of Heaven” feel burdened with a sense of finality - “I’ve carried this body for miles... I lay the angel on the wooden pyre \/ before taking one last Tate of heaven” feels as heavy as the blackened guitar riff refraining throughout the song. Through other songs like the intense “Burning Hand” (complete with it’s hypnotizing post-punk bridge) or the epic title-track closer, the imagery of King’s lyrics is an unapologetically grotesque examination of loss, exhaustion and suffering - brought fully to life by illustrator Ben Robert’s cover art for the release.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThese songs are yet another example of Portrayal of Guilt pushing the limits of their sound into more extremes. Chicha is originally the name of an alcoholic drink, made of fermented maize, which the Incas were especially fond of. Peruvian cumbia started being called chicha in the late 70s, around the same time that the music came to be viewed as the expression of the slums – the pueblos jovenes. Little by little, the word became an adjective, and people now talk of chicha culture, chicha press, chicha architecture, even of a chicha president, and none if it – you guessed right – is meant as a compliment. This sonic range isunified by Indigo’s strikingly confessional and effortless approach to songwriting, a signature first introduced inher debut, self-released LP, I Love My Mom. My dad is a bossa nova guitarist andsinger from Brazil and so I think I just had it in my blood from birth.” It wasn’t until moving to Asheville, NC thatIndigo began to move into her current sound, developing a writing practice that feeds from the currents thatsurround her: “Sometimes it feels like I am soaking up the energies of people around me and making art from aspace that is more a collective body than just my own.”\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eAt the forefront of all De Souza’s projects is her magnetism—her unique quality of spirit that is both buoyantand wise. While her backing band has undergone shifts between releases, her sound has stayed tethered to hervision.Any Shape You Takeis the first full-length album that Indigo produced herself. Teaming up with executiveproducer Brad Cook (Bon Iver, Waxahatchee, The War on Drugs) and engineers\/producers Alex Farrar and AdamMcDaniel, Indigo recorded the album at Betty’s, Sylvan Esso’s studio in Chapel Hill, NC and finished it withadditional production and mixing at Drop of Sun Studios in Asheville.
