Built in 1860, the church had historically been home to many congregations but in more recent years had become the venue for groups such as the Black Panthers, Gay Men’s Health Crisis and numerous arts organisations.

The series of Frippertronics concerts were held in aid of a Soho-based theatre group and they find the guitarist using his technique of slowly building the music from the ground up, step by step. It’s an approach which demonstrates how the addition or subtraction of a single note can change the entire mood of a piece as we move in the space of a few bars from an atmosphere of pensive anticipation to one of yearning hope. In an interview with the Melody Maker published just weeks before these concerts, Fripp was asked why he continued to perform Frippertronics concerts. “It gives me a way of working with intimate contact with members of an audience...It's almost an excuse to put me in a situation where one has the audience, performer and music, and in a certain kind of way something remarkable can happen. And that has happened to me, and it's not possible in a group...Frippertronics is the most enjoyable means of playing I've ever found.”

The Washington Square Church performances represent some of the finest recorded examples of the Frippertronics series. Unlike other such recordings where the loops are on tape in the DGM archive but the solos require painstaking matching of existing audience recordings and bootlegs to those loops to complete the picture, the solos for these shows were actually recorded but not labelled as to which solos matched which loops. The matched pairs only became possible when DGM audio engineer Alex R. Mundy realised that the loops had been picked up, at microscopic audio levels, by the guitar pick-ups playing the solos, allowing for identification. David Singleton was then able to mix and produce the resulting audio.

The music played more than rewards such efforts as, culled from the shows, (more complete versions appear on the “Exposures” boxed set), Fripp appears to explore every sonic avenue available to him as a guitar player – mesmerising loops, overlaid with beautiful solos, fast running ‘Frame by Frame’ style lines against a looped background, powerful ‘Scary Monsters’ type guitar noises and more besides.

This is the Frippertronics album that should have come out in 1982. What’s more, the records being made were reflecting back and influencing Bowie’s own work – 1979’s “Lodger” and 1980’s “Scary Monsters” owed a debt to strands of German kosmische (Holger Czukay), new electronica (Patrick Cowley, Harald Grosskopf), and the latest works from old friends and rivals like Robert Fripp, Peter Gabriel and Scott Walker, all of whom had been re-energised by the fizz of 1977.

• Compiled by Saint Etienne’s Bob Stanley and the BFI’s Jason Wood, “Fantastic Voyage” is the companion album to their hugely successful “Café Exil” collection, which imagined the soundtrack to David Bowie and Iggy Pop’s trans-European train journeys in the mid-to-late seventies. “Fantastic Voyage” is what happened next.

• Bowie’s influences and Bowie’s own influence were rebounding off each other as the 70s ended and the 80s began, notably in the emergent synthpop and new romantic scenes as well as through the music of enigmatic acts like the Associates and post-punk pioneers such as Cabaret Voltaire.

• Like “Low” and “Heroes”, some of the tracks on “Fantastic Voyage” are spiked with tension (Grauzone’s ‘Eisbär’) while some share those albums’ sense of travel (Simple Minds’ ‘Theme for Great Cities’, Ryuichi Sakamoto’s ‘Riot in Lagos’) and others find common ground with “Lodger’s” dark, subtle humour (Thomas Leer’s ‘Tight as a Drum’, Fripp’s ‘Exposure’).

• This is the thrilling, adventurous sound of European music before the watershed moment when Bowie would abandon art-pop for America and the emerging world of MTV with “Let’s Dance” in 1983. “Fantastic Voyage” soundtracks the few brief years when the echo chamber of Bowie, his inspirations, and his followers created an exciting, borderless music that was ready to challenge Anglo American influences.

track listing

SIDE ONE
1. Pet Shop Boys kick off with "I Wouldn't Normally Do This Kind Of Thing," followed by New Order with "Ruined In A Day" and Duran Duran’s "Too Much Information." Next come the powerful vocals of Annie Lennox with "Little Bird" followed by classics from defining albums: Sting with "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You” from ‘Ten Summoner’s Tales’ and R.E.M.'s "Nightswimming" from ‘Automatic For The People’. Up next are a stellar run of beautiful songs from Saint Etienne, Sade, Go West and Sananda Maitreya. SNAP! and M People scored huge Pop-Dance hits, and Heaven 17 and Visage saw remixed versions of their classics become hits once again. The first disc draws to a close with a great collaboration between David Sylvian and Robert Fripp plus Suzanne Vega, Chris Rea, and finishing with Elton John’s “Simple Life”.
CD2 takes you on a vibrant journey through Dance and Alternative Pop. Cappella’s high-energy "U Got 2 Know" and Urban Cookie Collective’s “Feels Like Heaven" set the tone, followed by infectious beats from Captain Hollywood Project and S.O.U.L. S.Y.S.T.E.M. featuring Michelle Visage. R&B smashes from Jade with "Don't Walk Away" and SWV’s "I'm So Into You" feature alongside Shara Nelson’s "One Goodbye In Ten", and Jamiroquai’s funky "Blow Your Mind". Stereo MC's, Sunscreem, and Pop Will Eat Itself add to the eclectic mix, and James’ "Sometimes", Del Amitri’s "When You Were Young," and Paul Weller’s "Sunflower" are representative of ‘93’s Pop-Indie crossover hits. The disc finishes with “Kite” from Nick Heyward – his first new release for five years, and power ballads from Cher with her live interpretation of “Many Rivers To Cross” and Bon Jovi’s “Bed Of Roses”.
CD3 includes powerful vocals and dance floor favourites. Opening with a huge track taken from a massive hit soundtrack: Whitney Houston’s "I Have Nothing", from ‘The Bodyguard’. Sister Sledge’s classic "We Are Family" was a hit again, remixed for the ‘90s dancefloor, followed by Taylor Dayne’s cover of "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love" and Lulu’s "Independence”. Sybil enjoyed her second big hit in ’93 with "When I’m Good And Ready", as did Haddaway with "Life", while more Eurodance came from Dr. Alban with the uplifting "Sing Hallelujah!". Barry Manilow’s "Copacabana" was remixed to become a hit for the second time, and cover versions of Pop classics “This Is It” and “Everlasting Love” gave Dannii Minogue and Worlds Apart chart success. Soulful vocals from Michelle Gayle, Gabrielle, Lisa Stansfield and Dina Carroll are featured ahead of UB40’s “Higher Ground”, whilst the final two tracks are from the years’ biggest pop groups; East 17 continued their chart run with “Slow It Down” and Take That saw “Babe” become their third number one in 1993.
An essential collection for any music lover, capturing the spirit and diversity of an unforgettable time in music.

NOW – Yearbook Extra 1993 - a further celebration of the diversity and magic of the year in Pop.

Tracklisting:

CD1
Pet Shop Boys - I Wouldn't Normally Do This Kind Of Thing
New Order – Ruined In A Day
Duran Duran - Too Much Information
Annie Lennox - Little Bird
Sting - If I Ever Lose My Faith In You
R.E.M. - Nightswimming
Saint Etienne - Hobart Paving
Sade - Kiss Of Life
Go West – The Tracks Of My Tears
Sananda Maitreya - Let Her Down Easy
Take That - Why Can't I Wake Up With You
SNAP! More previously unreleased tracks such as Balinese and Brainstorm and delights such as an early mix of New Marimba were also discovered by David Singleton in the process of collating and mixing this collection.

In addition, this package includes an audio documentary titled ‘Can We Record Tony?’ which is from a series of cassettes Fripp kept containing their original exploratory improvisations.

CD 1 - I ADVANCE MASKED
I ADVANCE MASKED
UNDER BRIDGES OF SILENCE
CHINA - YELLOW LEADER
IN THE CLOUD FOREST
NEW MARIMBA
GIRL ON A SWING
HARDY COUNTRY
THE TRUTH OF SKIES
PAINTING AND DANCE
STILL POINT
LAKELAND / AQUARELLE
SEVEN ON SEVEN
STULTIFIED

ADDITIONAL MATERIAL:
BRAINSTORM
NEW MARIMBA (EARLY MIX)
BALINESE
SEVEN ON SEVEN (REPRISE)

CD 2 - BEWITCHED

PARADE
WHAT KIND OF MAN READS PLAYBOY
BEGIN THE DAY
TRAIN
BEWITCHED
TRIBE
MAQUILLAGE
GUIDE
FORGOTTEN STEPS
IMAGE AND LIKENESS

ADDITIONAL MATERIAL:
TRIBE (ORIGINAL VERSION)
MAQUILLAGE (ALT ORIGINAL MIX)

CD 3 - MOTHER HOLD THE CANDLE STEADY (Previously Unreleased) :

IMPUDENT PRELUDE
BRAINSTORM
TREMORS
TURKISH KITCHEN
SKYLINE
FOI UM OPTIMO DIA
SAN ANTONIO BLUES
MOTHER HOLD THE CANDLE STEADY
ENTROPY PULSE
NINJA ACID DANCE
STEP N’ FETCHIT
MAQUILLAGE II
PARADE II
CAN WE RECORD TONY (EDIT)

BLU-RAY – All content in 24/96 Hi-Res

I ADVANCE MASKED
As CD including

NEW MIXES STEREO
NEW MIXES SURROUND (Also in DTS-HD MA 5.1 Surround)
ORIGINAL MIXES

BEWITCHED
AS CD plus:
NEW MIXES STEREO
NEW MIXES SURROUND (also in DTS-HD MA 5.1 Surround)
ORIGINAL MIXES

MOTHER HOLD THE CANDLE STEADY
STEREO
SURROUND (also in DTS-HD MA 5.1 Surround)
CAN WE RECORD TONY (COMPLETE)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0130/8714/6043/files/image008_abd55f4d-be2f-4ded-931a-57575e7bc3c9.jpg?v=1738264307
robert-fripp-washington-square-church-2lp-200g-1
Robert Fripp - Washington Square Church (2LP/200G)

Format: 2LP/200G
Catalogue No.: DGMLPX103
Barcode: 0633367606112
Release Date: 06 May 2022
Genre: Experimental rock

• Live Frippertronics performances taken from recordings in New York City between July & August 1981
• Mixed and Produced by David Singleton from audio restored by Alex R. Built in 1860, the church had historically been home to many congregations but in more recent years had become the venue for groups such as the Black Panthers, Gay Men’s Health Crisis and numerous arts organisations.

The series of Frippertronics concerts were held in aid of a Soho based theatre group and they find the guitarist using his technique of slowly building the music from the ground up, step by step.
