A full-on psychedelic club night. I’d been schooled in all things psychedelic, a result of working at Bam Caruso, a label steeped in psych who lovingly reissued many lysergic greats. It was a fantastic education. I was determined to bring some technicolour sonics to Liverpool. \u003cbr\u003eI found a suitable venue, called Krackers, at the bottom of Mount Pleasant. It was a big basement club, with a stage, video projector, lights, bar, and long tables. In front of the stage, there was ample space for a dance floor. There’s something about clubs in basements. They just work. I chatted to the owner, Bill, who suggested trying out Thursdays for the new night. Inspired by Bam Caruso, and the Soho club Alice in Wonderland, I agreed to take Thursdays on. 50p to get in. The night was named The Hangout.\u003cbr\u003eThe Hangout was born in autumn 1984. There were giveaways of sweets, flowers, balloons, and jelly. Tons of jelly. \u003cbr\u003eMusically, the Hangout’s take on psychedelia and freakbeat had one aim - to make you dance. We weren’t trainspotters – it didn’t matter if a record was rare, so long as it grooved and worked on the dancefloor. We’d give equal time to the more bandwagon end of sixties exploitation as to hipper acts. I’d pick up tracks on shopping trips in London with Phil Smee from Bam Caruso, or at Probe in Liverpool, where there was a class selection of psychedelia. Bob and Mick from Probe, and their mate Bernie Connor, became Hangout DJ’s, and brought even further mind-bending madness to the Hangout dancefloor. Standout tunes got played again and again, every week, until tracks like The Left Banke’s ‘I’ve Got Something on My Mind’, the Turtles ‘Buzzsaw’, Can’s ‘Outside Your Door’ and all the other tunes you now hold in your hands, became bona fide Hangout club anthems. The Hangout came and went in a flash, but its legacy of bringing psychedelic foot stompers to the dancefloor carries on. I first met Fatis at a reggae media event put on by Reggae Report Magazine being held in Mi-ami, Florida in approximately 1987. He had just completed a Yellowman album titled “Yellow Like Cheese” and I had the fledgling reggae label RAS Records. We immediately hit it off. We talked about my vision for taking legitimate reggae artists with something significant to say and spreading this music as far and wide internationally as possible. He talked about working with artists in Jamaica who also had the integrity necessary for them to be heard and respected worldwide. He told me that he did not know many people yet in the reggae business but that he felt he could trust me, and that he would give me a try. A type of bond and partnership was created that night. As I would go to Jamaica on a very regular basis, Fatis and I got closer and closer as friends and bredrin. He had me put out the first LPs by both Luciano (“Moving Up”) and Sizzla (“Burn-ing Up”). Little did either of us know at the time that both of these artists would go on to be-come some of the biggest artists in Jamaica's music history. Although initially launched as an outlet for “heavier sounds” beyond Clinco’s duties in new wave fantasists Drab Majesty, the project has ripened into a compelling exercise in world building, weaving themes of gritty city neo- futurist sleaze within a framework of driving, distorted guitars and cathode-blasted synths. Echoes of Chrome, Wire, Minimal Man, and Sisters Of Mercy ripple through the collection but ultimately Rough Dimension charts its own twisted vision of “our unforgiving reality.”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWritten and demoed across two weeks alone in a Marseille flat using his prized 1980’s Gibson “Invader” and a laptop, Clinco then took the tracks to Strange Weather studios in Brooklyn to record with Ben Greenberg (Uniform, The Men) who helmed 2019’s debut, Human Traffic Jam. The results are notably ripping, refined, and riveting. Riffs in alternate tunings chug and churn over mid-tempo drums punctuated by spikes of sci-fi electronics while the vocals swagger and spit venom (“where we walk is also where we shit \/ but if we bark at our reflections are we hypocrites? \/ impulses bleed right into our seed \/ where hate culminates the apple rotted on the tree”).
