It’s full of Swindon and deep seams of life there, that run through myself, Colin, and Dave, (Terry too of course). It's populated by members of our families, our hopes and dreams. The things we wished for, or feared, a stew of memories.” Andy Partridge – excerpted from the book Popartery, 2023
XTC’s seventh album, “The Big Express” was virtually ignored on release, much as its immediate predecessor “Mummer” had been. If Mummer was XTC’s quiet album, this was its polar opposite: bright, brash, noisy - even cluttered on occasion if the song demanded it - as it became a concept album of sorts, a partly autobiographical reflection on growing up in an industrial town, Swindon, with its history of engineering and railway accomplishments.
Perhaps in keeping with that tradition of technical innovation, the album also made extensive use of (at the time) new technology with Linn-Drum programming (alongside drummer Peter Phipps), E-mu Emulator and other synths claiming space among the more traditional guitars, bass and drums mix under-pinning the vocals.
This technology was juxtaposed with technology of a slightly earlier pop/rock era as phasing, backwards tapes and the inclusion of a mellotron hinted at a psychedelic influence that would move more centre-stage with the band’s next project – ‘The Dukes of Stratosphear’.
With XTC no longer touring, the sound radically different to any previous XTC album, in a musical climate where the upper end of the charts reflected national radio, producing the most mainstream result for years: Lionel Richie, Sade, Spandau Ballet, Howard Jones, Tina Turner, Queen – Frank Sinatra’s final solo studio album… the space for a metallic, post-punk concept album about growing up amidst the ghosts of Swindon’s industrial heritage proved non-existent.
Of course the songs were as good as on any other XTC album - a very high standard indeed – but they went largely unheard. Given that position, it would be easy to conclude that the timing was wrong for the album. But the best musicians follow the music and allow the times to catch up with that; precisely what happened when XTC released its next album “Skylarking” in 1986. Just as “Mummer’s” reputation (and sales) has increased over the years, “The Big Express” is now regarded as a ‘neglected classic’ of its era.
Now remixed by Steven Wilson in stereo, 5.1 Surround Sound & Dolby Atmos, the full impact and power of the album can be appreciated. Already given studio quality previews to an invited audience in London and LA at L-Acoustics studios, the reaction was one of collective awe at the amount of newly apparent detail & clarity in the Atmos mixes. As ever with XTC, the full package on the Blu-ray disc includes every recorded song from the era, ranging from demos through to the aforementioned Spatial Audio mixes.
Coal for the Soul.

CD (2023 Mixes)
1. Dillon was a stonemason from the small town of Boundbrook. There he was raised by his grandfather who was the church choirmaster and Dillon started singing in the church early. It was followed by more singles such as “The Whip" and culminated with the release of their first album “Engine 54” in 1968 on WIRL in Jamaica and on Doctor Bird in the U.K.

The album featured top tracks such as “Engine 54”, “Train To Skaville”, “Long Time Now”, “Come On Now”, and the great “Train To Glory” featured on the A side here. That same year they released "Everything Crash", their first major hit. The song criticised the dire situation in Jamaica whereas water and power were rationed which led to unrests. It is said that Dillon also helped build Perry's Black Ark Studios in 1973-4. In September 1975, Taylor was killed by a van while he was crossing a road. Which makes sense for several reasons. Firstly, the sound of the song is indeed more reminiscent of the Pioneers/Joe Gibbs work of that time. In fact The Ethiopians did not record with Joe Gibbs, with the exception of The Ring which was released in 1972, four years later, while the Pioneers were routinely involved with Gibbs in 1968. Last but not least, The Ethiopians had no beef with Lee Scratch Perry whilst The Pioneers songs were clearly incriminated by Scratch in his hit song “People Funny Boy.

Attention: This is a special limited edition strictly limited to 500 copies - one release only.

THE PIONEERS
The Pioneers were formed in 1962 by two brothers Derrick and Sidney Crooks and their friend Winston Hewitt later replaced by former Heptone Glen Adams.
The Pioneers' early singles were not successful, and the group broke up in 1967 Sydney started working at Joe Gibbs shop and then in the studio where he met a talented new young singer: Jackie Robinson. The new Pioneers were reborn as a duo. They recorded several successful singles such as "Longshot" "Jackpot", "Catch the Beat" with Gibbs before joining producer Leslie Kong where they recorded Samfie Man which topped the Jamaican charts. They then recruited George Agard and became a trio again.
They scored in the charts again with "Long Shot (Kick De Bucket)" a sequel to “Long Shot”, the tragic story of a race horse that never won and died racing! “Kick De Bucket” became an instant hit both in Jamaican and in the U.K. particularly among skinheads in 1969. More hits followed and the band moved to the UK in 1970. Over time, their sound changed and became more sophisticated and pop and they eventually recorded soul albums with Eddy Grant as a producer in 1976. It was not successful and the band split before reforming. They have been performing sporadically since then.

A SIDE:
Produced by Joe Gibbs
Lee “Scratch” Perry who previously worked as a music producer for Gibbs started his own label ”Upset” and got a hit in 1968 in Jamaica with his first recording “People Funny Boy” a song attacking his previous employer - Joe Gibbs - and incidentally The Pioneers. The music was similar to “Long Shot”, a track by The Pioneers just previously released by Gibbs that year. The lyrics were quite different though: “Now that you reach the top, And you turn big shot, All I've done for you, You no remember that” etc.
Joe Gibbs immediately retorted with this single starting with “People Grudgeful” on the A side. The music was a much harder version of Lee Scratch Perry song, with aggressive vocals by the Pioneers whilst the lyrics responded point by point to Perry accusations. The result is a great and brutal track, a “bad” track typical of Gibbs style at thas time, very rare on 7” and very much in demand today… Incidentally, it was covered by The Fall in 1993.

B SIDE:
Produced by Joe Gibbs
The second wave of attack directed to Perry was on the flip with the virulent "Pan Ya Machete". Lee Scratch Perry released “People Funny Boy” on his record label which was called “Upset” and showcased a machete drenched in blood as a logo. A Panya Machete is a Jamaican expression for an hypocrite: A Spanish machete (n.) (also Paniar machete, Pannya machete) [the Spanish machete has a two-edged blade and thus ‘cuts both ways’]
Although musically less aggressive than the A side, Machete is a great ballad with cracking vocals, made perfect by a dog repeatedly barking in the background! “Ah ah pan ya machete, hail Mr Upsetter, Little sins can lead to big big things, Me Nah come with water, dis time, me come wid fire, Pan ya machete, dats what you are, Two edge swords, dats what you are Scratch… “ Serious threats from the Pioneers!
