It was my local haunt,and I used to turn up with acetates and test pressings of just recorded Techno tracks from my regular trips to Detroit for DJ Neil Macey to give them their first UK plays.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNeil, who later came to work at Network, introduced me to Mark and we got talking about his partner, Chris Peat, and their recording project Nexus 21. They had released a pioneering U.K. Techno meets B-Boy album “The Rhythm Of Life” on Stafford label Blue Chip which had gone out of business. I was intrigued by the idea of working with fellow Midlanders making music I was used to going to Detroit to find for the Kool Kat label I co-owned.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor their part, Mark and Chris were beguiled by my Detroit connections. especiallythe fact I was managing their Techno idols Derrick May, Kevin Saunderso and Juan Atkins. A brief courtship was consummated when they signed to was to become our new label, Network, and our music publishing outfit Kool Kat Music.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNetwork bought the rights to the Blue Chip recordings, and tapes of the standout track “(Still) Life Keeps Moving were instantly despatched to Detroit where Kevin Saunderson conjured up a magical remix - at mates rates compared to what I was charging the majors record label majors for a rework by him -\u003cbr\u003eand he also threw in the first remix ever done by an unknown kid called Carl Craig!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis Stafford-Detroit connection seemed such a winner that my Netwotk partner Dave Barker and myself agreed we should send our new signings to Detroit to record. Not surprisingly there were no objections from Mark or Chris! Our bank manager would have probably had a view, but we never asked him anything.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe flew over in April 1990 and tracks were recorded at Kevin’s KMS Sudiio. Derrick May’s Transmat set up was upstairs in the same building, and Juan Atkins Metroplex operation next door. Mark and Chris were in Techno heaven. Four tracks were recorded “Don’t Do It Like That”, “Nexus”, “No Statues” and “Together” with a young Marc Kichen supplying percussion. Jay Denham added bits too, and Kevin supplied his engineer Chris Andrews working the desk where Inner City’s mega hit “Good Life” has been recorded a few months earlier.\u003cbr\u003eFor good measure you can hear Kevin talking on the outro to the instrumental mix of “Don’t Do It Like That.”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe stay also involved Mark and Chris hanging out with Detroit Techno royalty Derrick May’ Juan Atkins, Ann Saunderson, Chez Damier and Octave One plus for good measure overcoming “but we’re British” trepidation and performing at revered Motor City Techno venue Club Taboo.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAll in all an epic trip. I can remember flying back to the UK with the guys absolutely delighted with the recordings and planning World domination. So why didn’t the recordings - apart from “Together”- never get released? I would love to give you a detailed explanation but I can’t!\u003cbr\u003eI vaguely remember a plan to add “Nexus” and “No Statues” to the Nexus 21 tracks later released on the excellent “Progressive Logic” Network EP, the idea being that this would be the basis of an LP which we believed would establish Nexus 21 as electronica giants.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs for “Don’t Do It Like That” with those beguiling sassy vocals by Donna Black, we had hopes of a Pop crossover hit once the (never released) album came out. Frequency (1990 Depth Mix Extended)\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThat was the question put to Mark Gamble when the initial mixes of “Take Me Back” were delivered to Network in 1990.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eMark - he of the mad Mohican haircut - replied as low and dirty as you want.\u003cbr\u003eHis subsequent definitive Bass Heads mix became the ultimate Dance Music With Bleeps anthem, causing chaos and literally carnage as bass bin speakers in clubs throughout the World were well and truly blown.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eNetwork had to get a lawyer on board to deal with compensation claims from outraged club owners as Take Me Back was hailed as an instant iconic classic.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eA Robert Gordon edit “with extra bass” added Steel City credibility and that, plus promo copies on a spoof 0742 label, built up the myth that Mark hailed from Bleep capitol Sheffield.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn fact despite being a member of Krush whose mega “House Arrest” generated headlines hailing Sheffield as the UK’s equivalent of Detroit, boffin Mark was creating his brooding earthquake sonic booms from a tiny bedroom studio in his Nottingham house.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eTo celebrate Network’s 30th Anniversary, Mark searched for the master tape of his 1990 gem and has come up with a typically sound splat of a remix.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt’s Track 1 here and “Take Me Back” also features with a TJ edit of the Anniversary remix, plus the aforementioned classic Bass Heads and Rob Gordon edit versions.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThere’s also the original versions of “Frequency” and “Demons” which each followed up “Take Me Back” and were also acclaimed as iconic Dance Music With Bleeps moments. The launch of the logo with Neal Howard “Indulge” in 1990 caused a sensation, with the track being instantly acclaimed as a Classic, and Network noted as a new label to watch.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e “Indulge” hails from Chicago, but sounds like its’ DNA is Techno City Detroit.\u003cbr\u003e A futuristic call to dance from Windy City mystery man Neal Howard, whose previous releases “The Gathering” and “To Be Or Not To Be” had already reached cult status. Those gems, and “Indulge” were recorded by Chicago label Phuture Sound.
