The single went gold in 1971, the same year Danny Krivit began professionally DJing and was the first among many records of Wright's that would become important in Krivit's sets. While he regularly featured the mid-tempo stepper "I Love The Way You Love" and the bright, funky "Where Is The Love," given our focus on high-energy Garage classics Mr. K's pick from Wright's oeuvre for this single was naturally "One Step Up, Two Steps Back." A 1984 release produced by Amir Bayyan, younger brother of Ronald "Kool" Bell of Kool & the Gang and a successful producer who was infusing the early '80s club scene with quality cuts like "Funn" by the Gunchback Boogie Band, "Give It To Me" by Conquest and two strong singles from Tomorrow's Edition. The sound of "One Step Up" is prototypical big drum mid-'80s, with the added touch of a Morales & Munzibai Mix on the 12-inch. "Not many other people knew how to play it the way Larry did," Krivit recalls, "It had a lasting affect on me, which inspired this edit". This version Focuses on the intensity & building of Larry Levan only using the key elements of the dub mix, and emphasizing the late-song emotional peak of Wright's vocals, giving it a much tougher edge.

Eddy Rosemond's recording career may have been but a brief flash compared to Betty Wright's, but his song "(Wake Up And Move) Funk It" punches well above its weight on the flip of this high-energy Garage excursion. Riding giddily over a peak time disco groove, the singer from Martinique's similarity to Sylvester is uncanny. For a Garage audience who adored Sylvester's signature sound but were left unmoved by a lot of his '80s releases, "Funk It" became a surrogate for the sound they'd come to love. Krivit's edit rightly features the much-sampled cosmic synth hook, still sounding futuristically funky as ever, and loses none of the frantic power of the original.

Format: 7"
Cat: MXMRK 2035
Release Date: 30th April 2021
Genre: Disco/Nu-Disco

A must have 7"... this is a big one! Although Danny Krivit had a few well-regarded edits on wax before "Love Is The Message," it was his head-turning cut-up of MFSB's masterpiece on TD records that put him firmly and irrevocably on the scene as a go-to man with the razor. The song was already well-established, but existed in many manifestations. Krivit's version focussed on Leon Huff's rippling electric piano solo & breakdown of the powerhouse rhythm section of Earl Young and company, a much anticipated highlight for subsequent generations of disco devotees. For its debut on 7-inch, Krivit has trimmed his famed original mix down to a fully functional five and a half minutes, a tight distillation of an undisputed classic of the genre. While the four-on-the-floor drums of Earl Young are rightly cited as key inspiration for the rhythmic style of house music, the flip side of Mr. K's new 7-inch showcases another immediate predecessor, this one recorded more than 1,000 miles southwest of the discos of New York and Philadelphia. "I Can't Turn Around" is the final track on Isaac Hayes's 1975 Chocolate Chip LP, and it builds steam like a locomotive, until the Memphis musicians of the Isaac Hayes Movement are open throttle on a hypnotically repeating orchestral funk riff. The song was a huge favorite in Chicago's Warehouse and its subsequent incarnation The Music Box, and the direct inspiration for early house hits by Steve "Silk" Hurley and Farley "Jackmaster" Funk. Who exactly recontextualized the churchly platter for the spiritual dance floor is a matter of some contention. Was it the born-again Walter Gibbons, a member of the congregation who lived nearby at the time, and then perhaps Tony Humphries, who worked at a local record store that carried the LP? But in an ocean of gospel dance music, this one distinctively sticks out as an underground dance classic. For this special release, Mr. K has trimmed his rare Japan only "Stand On The Word" 12" release from the crystalline intro to the beloved standout vocal lines to an ear-catching alternate piano outro, making it readily attainable on 7-inch for the first time. An astounding acapella fills the flip side with crackling handclaps and thundering foot-stomps, sounding as if it was recorded at church, or the final hour of the 718 Sessions (same thing). Recorded in the Beatles' Abbey Road studio at the height of the Summer Of Love, the Zombies' "Time Of The Season" is firmly linked in pop culture to the late '60s and the Vietnam era, although it almost never made it out to a wider audience. Ignored on its initial release, it was given a second chance by the label as the last gasp from a band that had officially split up a year before. This time around the song steadily gained fans and word-of-mouth plays in the U.S. and by the summer of 1969, two years after it had been recorded, "Time Of The Season" was ubiquitous and well on its way to being firmly enshrined as an emblem of the era.

Krivit's edit highlights the parade of lush sonic textures that ornament the hip composition, from the iconic, exquisitely echoed bass-clap-exhale riff that opens the song to the cascading Hammond organ solos of Rod Argent. Naturally, this MEU issue keeps the audio quality at its highest level, the better to appreciate these nuances. "It's a song from my childhood that really struck a chord," Danny says. "Over the years I often played a rough edit which always seemed to go over great. The song seemed to get better and better, and age like fine wine." We agree!

From flowers and incense, we move to glass and steel. "Theme For Great Cities" envelops us in a soaring, intense groove, as emblematic of the post-punk no wave style of 1981 as "Time of the Season" was to its own era. Produced by Gong's Steve Hillage, this futuristic instrumental is a bit like Bowie's wordless works with Eno, with an added downtown edge. "The original really struck me," Danny recalls, "especially at Roxy in the early '80s hip hop nights, on that Richard Long sound system... It really blew me away with its atmosphere!"

Danny's edit combines the lean and mean original with a trackier remixed version, cleanly lifting off on an epic ride that clocks in at nearly ten minutes. Minnie Riperton's 1977 single "Stick Together" was an outlier in her catalog of smooth modern soul, an intentional nod in the direction of the prevailing disco sound. Co-written with Stevie Wonder, "Stick Together" in its original single release was divided into two parts, the first a fairly conventional uptempo cut with all the catchy qualities you'd expect from Stevie and the husband and wife team of Richard Rudolph and Minnie. It was the second half of the song that caught the ears of DJs who played for funkier dancefloors, however. Freddie Perren, a former member of Motown's legendary Corporation collective of songwriters and producers, and a man then red-hot off his success with Tavares' "Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel" and the Sylvers' "Boogie Fever," was on production duties, and the song clearly benefits from his disco-friendly touch. In Mr. K's epic edit we are treated to a lengthy exploration of the second part of "Stick Together," featuring keyboardist Sonny Burke (veteran of Marvin Gaye's band and fresh from playing on Candi Staton's disco smash "Young Hearts Run Free") working out an irresistible Jingo-esque piano part, Riperton's sensual ad-libs, and, as if that wasn't enough, a cameo appearance by Pam Grier on finger snaps! Krivit's 8-minute-plus edit passes way too quickly to get enough of the hypnotic groove - rewinds are called for! Our flip side, "Body Language," originated as an album cut on the Jackson Five's last album of original material for Motown, Moving Violation, recorded before Jermaine left to go solo and the remaining brothers joined Epic Records in a new incarnation as the Jacksons. For such an obvious heater it's puzzling why the label never released it as a single; but regardless of that apparent misstep, "Body Language" has long been a sure shot in many DJs' bags. With his new edit, Mr. K presents the track in its ultimate form, loud, remastered, stretched out and rippling with energy over a full six minutes. When it was time for Letta to record her first album for Chisa, the Crusaders backed her in the studio with powerful horn arrangements by Masekela. "Mahlalela (Lazy Bones)" was written by Semenya and was released as a single, immediately finding a fan in the young Danny Krivit back in NYC, who included it in his very first DJ sets. "A truly stand-out funky African track," Danny describes it, pointing to the distinctive vocals and instantly immersive atmosphere that envelopes listeners from the first notes. What sets "I'm Here Again" apart though, is the incredible second half, not surprisingly also the main focus of Mr. K's edit, along with a new straight to the point intro. Over a vicious groove reminiscent of the Originals' "Down To Love Town" breakdown (Michael Sutton wrote and produced both "Love Town" and "I'm Here Again") Houston delivers soul-stirring ad libs as the band crackles with electricity behind her, the piano chasing a descending string riff so eagerly it almost trips over itself. Motown was finalizing its move from Detroit to Los Angeles, and this 1972 Eddie Kendricks session was among the last to be recorded at the famed "Snake Pit" aka Studio A in Detroit. According to Young Senators percussionist Jimi Dougans, "Girl" was recorded at three o'clock in the morning, which perhaps accounts for some of the heavy vibe and distinctly different sound than the typical Motown pop style the label was known for. In a time before 12-inch singles, this was one of those first "made for a club" proto-disco records that could hold its power and even shine on a big system. In fact, Larry Levan used it to test the sound at the Garage. Danny's edit, which he's trimmed down for its debut on 7-inch, works with this instrumental break and more than lives up to Aletti's description as an addictive warm weather jam.

From the moody instrumental sound of "Don't Let Go" we move to the bright uptempo vocal track "I Fall In Love Everyday." In spite of the relative obscurity of this fabulous but lesser-known cut, it comes with a sparkling pedigree. "I Fall In Love Everyday" was written by Jay Graydon (whose credits also include "Turn Your Love Around" for George Benson and "Breakin' Away" for Al Jarreau), produced by Motown ace Mickey Stevenson (who wrote "Dancing In the Street") and arranged by David Foster, who was just making the transition from session keyboardist to the superstar songwriter/arranger he'd become. The backing track was first used for singer/TV personality Jaye P. Morgan's version of the song a year earlier, but you certainly can't blame the team for reusing the music when the band included studio heavyweights like Harvey Mason, Lee Ritenour, Ray Parker Jr., and Kenny Loggins. Both songs are artfully rearranged by Mr. K and appear here on 12-inch vinyl for the first time. Margie Joseph was a powerful soul singer from the deep South who in her younger days was compared favorably to Aretha Franklin. But by the time of this recording in 1976, Joseph had moved on from the Southern soul sound and was looking for something new. She found it in collaboration with Lamont Dozier (who would actually go on to produce Aretha the following year). Dozier's song "Prophecy" was recorded at least three times, with Betty Everett doing it in '77 and Dozier himself using it as the title track for a planned 1975 solo album that was unfortunately never released. It's Margie Joseph's energetic version that made the song a proto-disco dance floor classic however, getting heavy spins on the U.K. modern soul scene and at the Houston St. incarnation of Nicky Siano's infamous 'Gallery'. "Prophecy" has also long been a Danny Krivit favorite, appearing on his 2001 compilation Grassroots. Mr. K turns in a new, definitive mix of the song, complete with a never heard before acapella intro and outro section. The writing on the wall says this one is still a winner! Going back just a couple years prior to "Prophecy" is our flip side, "I'm Just Being Myself." This time we have an even more high profile female singer who again was looking for a new sound. In the case of Dionne Warwick, she and her longtime collaborators Hal David and Burt Bacharach had split acrimoniously not long before, and her new label Warner Brothers, seeking a fresh twist for her voice, teamed her with the celebrated Holland-Dozier-Holland team. Lamont Dozier and the Holland brothers were of course responsible for numerous Motown smashes, but by the early '70s Berry Gordy had moved operations west to L.A. and H-D-H struck out on their own, choosing to remain in Detroit. "I'm Just Being Myself" was recorded at the team's studio there, with a cast of Motown veterans fleshing out the magnificent Holland-Dozier composition. Mr. K's edit squeezes the most out of the underlying groove, avoiding the chorus in favor of prominent percussion, dramatic strings, and soaring flute. Warwick herself doesn't make an entrance until five minutes into this epic rearrangement, cooly riding the building instrumental tension. A long-time standard in Krivit's bag, this edit makes its full length appearance on wax for the first time.

Tracklist
Side 1
1. "Prophecy" (edit By Mr K)
Side 2
1. "I'm Just Being Myself" (edit By Mr K)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0130/8714/6043/products/1_83f2d1cb-2947-410e-87da-137069749090.jpg?v=1642071745
mr-k-edits-by-mr-k-magics-in-the-air
MR K - Edits By Mr K: Magic's In The Air

Format: 12" Vinyl
Catalogue No.: MXMRK2047
Release Date: 14 Mar 2022
Genre: Disco/Nu-Disco

It was certainly unpredictable that a legendary jazz drummer would record one of spiritual disco's most revered songs twenty-three years into his career, but that's exactly what happened when Idris Muhammad laid down the epic "Could Heaven Ever Be Like This" in 1977. Hailing from New Orleans, Muhammad always had more than a touch of funk to his rhythms, and by the late '70s his collaborations with master engineer Rudy Van Gelder on recordings for the CTI and Kudu labels had gelled perfectly with the reigning jazz-funk sound of the day. Arranger Dave Matthews (famously part of the James Brown stable) collaborated with lyricist and former Long Island record store clerk Tony Sarafino on writing the song, which on the original recording unfolds over a nearly 9-minute build. Appearing at the crest of the disco movement, "Could Heaven Ever Be Like This" was an immediate hit with David Mancuso and the attendees of his loft parties, quickly spreading to other venues and even making a small climb up the Billboard R&B charts. For this new issue on Most Excellent Unlimited, Danny Krivit, whose own career as a dancefloor orchestrator from the DJ booth has paralleled the timeframe of the song's existence, has replaced the original loose introduction with a mix-friendly steady groove that maintains the unstoppable pulse of the song while maintaining the cathartic mid-song break and giving the track potential for even more momentum.

Another percussionist is responsible for our flip side track, "Magic's in the Air." Vince Montana was not only an in-house arranger and producer for Philadelphia International and other Philly soul labels, but was an accomplished vibraphone player. His talents are on display and doubly emphasized by Mr. K in this overlooked cut from Ronnie Walker, a falsetto singer who draws a rather strong comparison to the best songs of fellow Philadelphians Blue Magic with this uptempo, subtly synthy 1975 track. Never having appeared on a 12-inch, and indeed never having appeared even on a full-length album, Krivit's edit is the first extended mix of "Magic's in the Air" to date. For the latest in our long-running exploration of Mr. K's edit crates comes this pair of underground hits that rocked the legendary Roxy in early '80s New York City. As a resident DJ, Danny Krivit saw it all unfold in real time. "A lot of the hip hop played at Roxy's Friday night dance party was cutting edge for the dance scene," he recalls. Although hugely influential on new dance music being made, the hip hop records coming out were rarely in the groove enough for roller skating - the rest of the week, when Roxy's dance floor was turned over to the skaters, the music had to have the correct tempo and groove to keep the wheels turning. "These two songs were an unusual exception in that they were strong for both Roxy's Friday night dance party and Roxy's roller skating crowd," Krivit explains. Orange Krush were an essential part of the early hip hop scene, but are rarely acknowledged, probably because they only released this one single under their own name. Led by veteran Larry Smith, they performed all the music on the early Run-DMC albums, and were managed by Russell Simmons before he founded Def Jam. For this recording the group also brought in Maureen Reid, a session singer who had done backup vocals for Fatback Band. Predating Janet Jackson by half a decade, she sizzles with a delicious dressing down of a would-be Romeo: "I don't want to hear that you think I'm fine... I got eyes and I'd like to see / what it is you're gonna do for me!" Mr. K's edit preserves the signature drum intro and finally makes this very hard to find single more widely available on 7-inch.

Malcolm McLaren was a true impresario, a shrewd recognizer and organizer of talent whose own abilities, however, stopped at that point. As such, he relied on an entourage of musicians and energetic performers to bring his visions to life. In WHBI's World's Famous Supreme Team, a pair of radio hosts with an easy flow on the mic, he found a ready connection to the nascent hip hop scene in NYC. Now he just needed musicians to back them up, but not just any musicians... It had to be cutting edge. Enter the Art of Noise, a British band dedicated to exploring the latest technological innovations in music making. "World's Famous" is what happened when the two came together under McLaren's direction. Music that veers from highly musical, jazzy improv to block-rocking sampled drums and scratches is overlaid with the practiced patter of Sedivine and Just Allah, the eponymous Supreme Team themselves. Ditching the far too short album version that McLaren first released in 1983, Mr. K's edit is an extended take that adds a couple iconic vocal drops from other McLaren singles and allows plenty of room for Anne Dudley's suave piano solo ("Anne, bring in the organ!") and the groove, a perfect pulse for skating.

As usual, these cuts are virtually unfindable in their original 7-inch form and have been carefully remastered and edited for maximum utility and club-friendly sound.

Tracklist
Side 1
1. "Action"
Side 2
1. "World Famous"

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0130/8714/6043/products/1_93b2810b-8626-4637-bc7d-bacfbc9f8cca.jpg?v=1651778024
mr-k-edits-by-mr-k-it-should-have-been-me
MR K - Edits By Mr K: It Should Have Been Me

Format: 7" Vinyl
Catalogue No.: MXMRK2049
Release Date: 27 Jun 2022
Genre: Soul

Mr K (Danny Krivit) is back once again with another vital selection of his edits kicking off with the title track 'It Should Have Been Me' a lazy and heart wrenching soul jam with deep cut bass, guttural female vocals that are as raw as you can imagine and some lush strings. On the A-side, he pays tribute to beloved NYC DJ and editor Gail "Sky" King by recreating her extended edit of the Frankie Beverly and Maze sureshot 'Before I Let Go'. The edit arrived a decade after the original surfaced on the best-selling 1981 Live In New Orleans LP, although the track was not actually a concert recording but a new studio track made to fill out the final "D-side" of the release. Alas, the gorgeously danceable funk/soul hybrid was pressed at low quality, the harsh sonic nature meaning it never got the support it truly deserved. It comes here backed by 'Hollywood's Message' from legendary hip-hop pioneer DJ Hollywood, a self-released single from the man who was one of the first to grab the microphone at a jam and rhyme over records. As a backing track for his rhymes, Hollywood took a shortcut and used the renowned 'Love Is The Message' edit created by Mr. K that repeatedly runs the groovy clavinet break from MFSB's tune. 'Church Girl Church', meanwhile, is a tight, joyous and mood enhancing take on a piano-powered slab of righteous gospel-soul perfection.

Side 1
A1. "Rise & Shine"
Side 2
B1. "Church Girl Church"

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0130/8714/6043/files/8_b586ce83-ede7-4e3c-b8f2-ffaae6704383.jpg?v=1756304933
the-mr-k-edits-the-house-is-rockin-7-vinyl
The MR K EDITS - The House Is Rockin [7" Vinyl]

Format: 7" Vinyl
Catalogue No.: MXMRK2074
Release Date: 10 Oct 2025
Genre: Disco/Nu-Disco

Bobby Caldwell may be best known for his timeless hit 'What You Won't Do For Love' but he has also penned a ton of other tunes that are just as great. Edit king Danny Krivit knows that and now shines a light on some of the hidden corners of the American's discography with a twist of Caldwell's first single, 'The House Is Rockin'. Opening with an extended, DJ-friendly drum break, Krivit stretches the track into the breezy, sunlit groover it always hinted at being and on the flip, he reworks Eddy Grant's 'California Style', teasing out its pre-house vibes and zeroing in on the bubbling synths and hypnotic bassline while trimming the vocals.
