After a childhood spent studying Islamic mysticism and devotional songs in the Sufi shrines of his native Sindh he soon fell in love with the 'deep song' of flamenco and was taken in as an apprentice to the great heterodox cantaor Pepe Marchena after a chance encounter. He dedicated the rest of his life to flamenco and developed an elaborate theory of the South Asian and Sufi origins of the art which he propagated through live performances and publications in London, Spain and Pakistan.

Decades before the arrival of the academic discipline of ethnomusicology or the invention of 'fusion' Aziz Balouch painstakingly immersed himself into a completely different musical tradition seeking connections and drawing inspiration to create a unique performance style which has tragically remained hidden and ignored. These 4 tracks are taken from Aziz Balouch's only surviving recording, an EP released in Spain in 1962. On each track Balouch draws on his polyglottism to seamlessly merge Sufi poetry in Persian, Sindhi, Hindi and Arabic with various forms of Andalusian song in Spanish. Accompanied by a single guitar his voice pushes through into the profound depths of human experience to excavate the shared past of flamenco which had been submerged beneath the surface.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0130/8714/6043/products/cover.ki_a6891a04-132c-49bc-8674-29fccfcbe749.jpg?v=1593860744
various-artists-if-i-had-a-pair-of-wings-jamaican-doo-wop-vol-2-cassette
Various Artists - If I Had a Pair of Wings: Jamaican Doo Wop, Vol 2 [Cassette]

Release: 28th August 2020
Label: Death Is Not The End
Genre: Soul/R&B
Cat #: DEATH028
UPC: 5050580710412
Format: Cassette

Tracklisting
1 Now I Know the Reason
Lloyd Clark Smithie's Sextet
2 Now You Want to Cry
The Charmers & With his unique vocal, he told stories of immigrant life and society which resonated with his intended audience, particularly in the shadow of the labour movement that had strong support in immigrant worker communities. Through the mid 1920s to early part of the 1930s Salomaa became a popular attraction at the Finnish Worker's House in Manhattan, and would cut these 18 sides for Columbia during this period, though his career seems to have been stymied by the great recession.

The recordings Salomaa made for Columbia found favour in Finland toward the end of World War II after being picked up by left-wing athlete (and later singer and actor) Tapio Rautavaara for airplay on Maaselä Front Radio, and later gained attention on Finland's national radio YLE. This enigmatic Finnish American performer would come to be adopted into some hearts as the country's answer to Woody Guthrie, and became somewhat of a talisman for the Finnish left.

However, it has been uncovered in Markku Salomaa's recent book on the life of Hiski, entitled Vapauden kaiho (after his most recognisable track, trans: Longing for Freedom), that this ideal is somewhat far from the real truth. Despite having once apparently been an IWW member, a picture emerges of Salomaa having merely been playing to the views of his crowd - and taking the corresponding cheque - without holding those views himself. Worse still, it's alleged that he was a card-carrying republican.

Still, hopefully you will enjoy these recordings nevertheless!

Format: Cassette
Catalogue No.: DEATH038
Barcode: 5050580751583
Release Date: 27th November 2020
Genre: Soul/R&B (Classic RnB)

01: Jiving Juniors Sweet as an Angel
02: Alton & Eddie My Heaven
03: Higgs & Wilson When You Tell Me Baby
04: Lloyd Adams I Wish Your Picture Was You
05: The Moonlighters Don't You Know
06: Ricketts & Rowe Dream Girl
07: Annette & Shenley The First Time We Met
08: Belltones I'll Always Call Your Name
09: Ruddy & Sketto Little Schoolgirl
10: Derrick & Patsy Crying in the Chapel
11: The Blues Busters I've Done You Wrong
12: Jiving Juniors My Sweet Angel
13: Higgs & Wilson Change of Mind
14: Wilfred Jackie Edwards Never Go Away

A third and final volume of Jamaican doo wop & R&B records taken from the late 50s and early 60s.

These records represent a period in which sound-systems were beginning to dominate the island, with Duke Reid and Sir Coxsone Dodd stepping up their rivalry by beginning to make and release their own records rather than rely on US imports for use in their dances. Longing For The Shadow: Ryūkōka Recordings, 1921-1939 goes back to the beginnings of the recording industry in Japan, and a style merging traditional Japanese forms with western pop and classical. Swooning orchestrations and prominent vocals capture some of the melodrama and bombast found in US and European music of the time, but beds of plucked and strummed instruments give an ordered elegance, tying it firmly to Hogaku tradition. Not much has been written about Ryūkōka, and a 2017 book by Hiromu Nagahara gives some clue as to why, arguing that although popular with the public, it was dismissed by critics both for its adoption of western sounds and its dwelling on Japanese traditional styles. Close to a century later, those are some of the qualities that make this compilation so fascinating." - The Quietus

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0130/8714/6043/products/1_d6e102fe-6e7e-49ad-bd20-b7927255b90d.jpg?v=1635875444
various-artists-last-wisps-of-the-old-ways-north-carolina-mountain-singing
Various Artists - Last Wisps of the Old Ways: North Carolina Mountain Singing

Format: Cassette
Catalogue No.: DEATH045
Barcode: 5050580770041
Release Date: 05 Nov 2021
Genre: Country / Old Time Appalachian

01: Mrs. Nicola "Aunt Nicky" Pritchard (Turbyfill) Bolakins
02: Mrs. Lena Bare Turbyfill Sourwood Mountain
03: Mrs. Lena Bare Turbyfill "Hold Up Your Hand Old Joshua!" She Cried
04: Mrs. Sabra Bare Hampton The Royal Band (The Texas Rangers)
05: Frank Proffitt Joshuay
06: Charlie Glenn Poor Ellen Smith
07: Mrs. Lloyd Bare Hagie Rowan County (The Roane Cty. Recorded with contributions from Nicholas Allbrook (Pond), Scarlett Stevens (San Cisco), India Rose & Jacob Diamond.

"I made this cassette in the living room of our house in Fremantle, a seaside town in Western Australia. I had always been shy to sing with others but moving across the world and my ex-boyfriend Nick had given me some bravery. Something about living closer to nature meant I felt creative and open hearted. It was as if the wide open landscape of Australia had finally given my heart enough space to open properly. The recordings are actually just recordings of our rehearsals, I never feel set in how song is meant to be so they usually just come out of me in the moment. My friends playing along with me are luckily all very empathic players and we found a way to play with one another without any structure or plan. It was really moving to create with so much freedom and understanding. Most of the songs are about my sister Peaches who I lost as a teenager so singing them aloud felt very potent but my band always made me feel held"

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0130/8714/6043/products/1_8389676c-03cd-434a-9dce-bf017545c2cb.jpg?v=1644857581
various-artists-lamkin-versions-variants-across-the-northern-hemisphere-cassette
Various Artists - Lamkin: Versions & Variants Across the Northern Hemisphere [Cassette]

Format: Cassette
Catalogue No.: DEATH054
Barcode: 5050580780415
Release Date: 06 May 2022
Genre: Folk/Field Recordings

01: Aunt Nancy Prather Beau Lamkins
02: Sabra Bare Hampton Bolenkin
03: Mary Jane Dyson Lord Daniels
04: Floyd Carpenter Loud Cain (Bow Lamkins)
05: Lydia Gyderson False Lankfear
06: Reuben Edwards O Lampkins
07: Adam Morris Lamkin
08: Lily Delorme Lamkin
09: Bertha Eldred False Lamkin
10: Mose Harris The Limkin
11: Clarence Bennet Bold Ankin
12: Nathan Hatt Lincoln Was a Mason
13: Irene Carlisle False Lampkins
14: Nathan & Rena Hicks Bol' Lamkin
15: Bobby McMillon Bo Lamkin
16: Terry Yarnell Lamkin
17: Mary Sweeney False Lampin

Folklorist Derek Piotr teams with Death is Not the End for a third outing, this time plumbing the depths of every archive from West Virginia University to the British Library in search of versions of the ballad Lamkin. That's something I would regret years later, when ad breaks had become cherished mementos of the hardcore rave era. Luckily, back in the day I often left the tape running while I went off to do something else. So a fair number of ad breaks got captured accidentally for my later delectation. Not nearly enough, though. So in recent years I started combing through the immense number of pirate radio sets archived on the internet. Sometimes the tracklists would note "ad break" or "ads", helping to narrow the search. But often I'd just stumble on a bunch in the middle of a pirate show preserved on YouTube or an oldskool blog. A few of my original unintended "saves" and latterday "finds" are included in this wonderful collection by audio archaeologist Luke Owen. It's the latest in his series of compilations of UK pirate radio advertisements, with this volume focusing on the audio equivalent of the rave flyer: MCs breathlessly hyping a club night or upcoming rave, listing the lineup of deejays and MCs, boasting about hi-tech attractions like lasers and projections, mentioning prices and nearest landmarks to the venue, and occasionally promising "clean toilets" and "tight but polite security" ("sensible security" is another variation). Some of these ads are etched into my brain as lividly as the classic hardcore and jungle tunes of that time. (Most rave ads incorporate snippets of current music, of course – big anthems and obscure "mystery tracks" alike). Names of deejays ring out like mythological figures: who were Shaggy & Breeze, Kieran the Herbalist, Tinrib, Food Junkie? Putting on my serious hat for a moment, I think these ads are valuable deposits of sociocultural data, capturing the hustling energy of an underground micro-economy in which promoters, deejays and MCs competed for a larger slice of the dancing audience. But mostly, they are hard hits of pure nostalgic pleasure, amusing and thrilling through their blend of period charm, endearing amateurism, and contagiously manic excitement about rave music's forward-surge into an unknown future. Putting on my serious hat for a moment, I think these ads are valuable deposits of sociocultural data, capturing the hustling energy of an underground micro-economy in which promoters, deejays and MCs competed for a larger slice of the dancing audience. cut-ups, taken from DIY cassette recordings featuring rare groove and "soul blues" soundsystems playing at early morning house parties and blues dances - mostly in South & East London - between the mid 1980s & early 90s.

Sounds like Funkadelic, Touch of Class, Latest Edition, JB Crew, Manhattan, 5th Avenue (and the many more featured on this tape) originally began to form in the mid-1980s. With lovers rock dwindling, and the reggae scene becoming dominated by harder digital-style dancehall, these sounds provided a tight but loyal crowd with a potent alternative - playing a mixture of killer rare soul, funk and boogie records in an inimitably reggae soundsystem style, complete with toasting, sirens and effects aplenty.

They were most well-known for playing at house parties and blues dances, typically in small flats or warehouses, with timing of such events generally running from the early morning hours until late the next afternoon. Though the popularity of the sounds faded following the dance music explosion of the early 1990s, there has been continued demand for revival sessions ever since. Whilst the influence of key British reggae & dancehall soundsystems on subsequent UK sounds like hardcore & jungle is relatively well documented, a similar line can just as easily be drawn from these sounds and the aforementioned styles' tendency toward sampling popular rare groove cuts, particularly well evidenced in the work of Tom & Jerry, 4hero, Reinforced & LTJ Bukem among others.

This represents the first outing in a series of collections exploring the sounds of UK soundsystem culture, via extracts from archival DIY cassette recordings of blues parties, dances & clashes made between the late 70s and early 90s. Often duplicated and shared widely, these ruff and ready "sound tapes" provided keen ears with music that wasn't otherwise readily available on the airwaves or in the record shops, and would go on to leave a deeply-rooted but too often overlooked influence on the UK's musical landscape.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0130/8714/6043/products/1_0deb47c7-cbe0-42e8-93e6-71679dc8bc4d.jpg?v=1663766400
death-is-not-the-end-quilt-tee-black-large
Death Is Not The End - Quilt Tee (Black) [Large]

Format: T-Shirt, Large
Catalogue No.: DINTEE7L
Barcode: 5050580794122
Release Date: 14 Oct 2022
Genre: Folk / Field Recordings

DINTE quilt tee designed by Kate Owen, screenprinted in white on black heavy Gildan shirts, in sizes M, L & XL.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0130/8714/6043/products/1_4e7c04de-e5b3-41e8-8c15-dfefb85216f7.jpg?v=1665406850
