Jamelia

If you think you know Caribou, think again. Dan Snaith’s new album, Swim is the sound of the musical glass ceiling being blown away.
If there is a link to previous album Andorra, it would be in the ravishing explosions of sound pulsing through album closer ‘Niobe’. A continuum of sorts leads us to 2010, but that finale gives mere hints as to the future Caribou. From the opening effervescent gambol of ‘Odessa’ to the glorious odyssey of ‘Jamelia’, it’s crystal clear that Caribou has made a massive leap forwards, upwards and sideways.
With the trajectory of his previous three psychedelic wonderland albums culminating with The Flaming Lips asking Caribou to do ‘something special’ for ATP NYC in September 2009, Dan put together a 15 piece band including the likes of Marshall Allen (Sun Ra Arkestra band leader) as part of a 5 piece horn section, Kieran ‘Four Tet’ Hebden, Jeremy ‘Junior Boys’ Greenspan, Koushik, Luke ‘Born Ruffians’ Lalonde, four drummers, gong, synths, vibes and everyone who has ever played live with Caribou, collaborating on the most epic Caribou performance, ever.
“Definitely dream come true type stuff for me to make that happen with all my friends and Marshall Allen up there killing it at age 85,” Dan swoons. “I hope we get to do it again but in some ways it seems like a logical end to the chapter of my music that’s been big, messy psych records.”
Dan’s latest recording sees him getting busy in the basement with some expertly constructed, rave-tinged sounds that sing with soul. But that’s not all. As a songwriter of considerable standing, Dan has not subsumed his uniquely recognisable touch in an orgy of technical bliss – although, there is plenty of euphoria in the musical alchemy on offer. From Dan’s perspective, he says, “The most important thing for me with this record was finding my own sonic vocabulary. That’s why I’m proud of this record.”
Swim is full of brightly textured, rapturous gems that gleam with astonishing production – and then wrenches at your heart with soulful, thoughtful reveries on the passing of time, family history and the breakdown of relationships. “There are songs about growing old in a relationship, about divorce and loneliness in old age but the lyrics are generally pretty abstract sketches of what’s going on in the situation in my head.”
We can’t think of another multi-instrumentalist/ producer/ songwriter/ singer/ arranger/ composer who has the ability to harness all these talents into something as breathtakingly gorgeous yet dancefloor-ready as Dan Snaith.
We’re not alone in thinking just how special Caribou is. After the winning the prestigious 2008 Polaris Music Prize (Canada’s answer to the Mercury Music Prize, where he saw off the likes of Black Mountain & Holy Fuck in so doing), Dan decided to use the winnings to take his home production ethic to the next level.
Enlisting Born Ruffians’ Luke Lalonde to sing ‘Jamelia’, and mixing expertise from, David Wrench (of Julian Cope's Black Sheep band and a scholar and solo recording artist of 16-18th century songs of insurrection in a doom metal style) in Bryn Derwen Studio in Wales and Jeremy Greenspan’s Pistachio studio in the pairs’ home town of Hamilton, Ontario, Swim has a widescreen, audiophile depth not previously heard on Caribou’s endearingly scruffy albums Andorra and Up in Flames.
“I got excited by the idea of making dance music that’s liquid in the way it flows back and forth, the sounds slosh around in pitch, timbre, pan... Dance music that sounds like it’s made out of water rather than made out of metallic stuff like most dance music does,” Snaith says.
And boy, how he achieved this in spades! There are so many highlights and memorable flourishes here. From the more assured nature of Dan’s vocal takes meshed in the midst of the swirling majesty, the sonic thrust of ‘Kaili’, the relentlessly bubbling addictive nature of ‘Sun’. The fluid interplay of flute and percussion of ‘Leave House’ colliding with a splendidly distended vocal take from Dan that drops in and out of the mix to leave us in a veritable frenzy. Oh, and ‘Found Out’s John Carpenter-esque dread with killer guitar licks from Dan Snaith himself.
And we haven’t even arrived at album highlight ‘Hannibal’ featuring a horn section (see below) throwing down warm and vital instrumentation amidst the bounce. This track seems nigh on perfect, as does ‘Bowls’ with its oozing bass, stuttering Tibetan bowls and a percussive clatter that seems at stages like it is literally melting (James Holden agreed to remix the track on the spot upon hearing it). It also helps that it sounds as though Dorothy Ashby is guiding proceedings! The final track ‘Jamelia’ (yes it is named after her if you want it to be) seems to take all elements of the component parts to breaking point in the best possible way. The cut and thrust of this tune is simply marvellous, especially the use of coruscating string shards cutting through the mix. Both of these latter tracks will be seen as benchmarks for production in 2010.
Through getting all the musicians together for the Caribou ATP extravaganza, Dan met a quartet of young free jazz players from Toronto - Colin Fisher (tenor), Kyle Brenders (bass clarinet and soprano saxophone), Rob Piilonen (flute) and Steve Ward (trombone), who recorded their parts in Toronto straight after the ATP show. Their contributions also mark a significant shift in the Caribou path.
This year will also see a dramatic difference in the Caribou live performance. Now that technology has finally caught up to Dan’s ambitions for the band’s show, while it will still be four musicians on stage, the dynamic interplay between visuals, electronics and the live sound is totally pliable.
“Now we can play the mix onstage like a dub mixer would - but even moreso than a Lee Perry because almost everything can be manipulated - not just the things that are controlled on a recording studio mixing desk. We can get that washing-around feeling and the unpredictability of sounds undergoing changes all the time.” They say it takes a few years for the new century to kick in… here we go.

Release date: 13th November 2020
Formats: CD
Label: City Slang
Catalogue Number: SLANG50300
Barcode: 4250506836962
Genre: Soul, Rock

In the fall of 2019, Lambchop’s Kurt Wagner had a unique idea: In lieu of going on what would become an economically disastrous tour, he would invite the band to Nashville to make a record as a way to provide them with similar financial support and realize something tangible in the process. Growing up as a female of color who would later in her life unearth and embrace her queerness, discussing and reconciling who she is with the perception of who people think she should be, has become a lifelong mission for Mia.

Tracklisting:
A1. Now their debut album Mazes, recorded in San Francisco and mixed in Berlin during 2010 as the band prepared to move to the mountains of Colorado, explores a far broader, lighter, sound.

That’s most clear on the dreamy organ and skipping riff of the title track, which recalls the Velvet Underground, or the handclaps and swinging organ bloops over the potent shredding and guttural riff delivered by Johnson in When You Cut. Throughout, Mazes is the sound of Moon Duo carving out their own identity, looking to the horizon, and moving forward.

Ripley says that, as a guitarist and songwriter, delineating between Moon Duo and Wooden Shijps “happens naturally. I focus on one project at a time, and the way the two bands operate is very different. And there are certain limitations that Moon Duo is forced to accept, not having a drummer for example, and I really like that. I like the creative challenge of working with limitations. Having done so much home recording cultivates that. Working with one other person is much different from working with four.”

This meant a vastly different recording process to Moon Duo’s first two EPs, which were recorded fast and at home. Mazes was a more drawn-out process, involving proper recording studios for the first time including the trip to Berlin to mix and re-record certain parts and the track ‘Run Around’. “The working title was Die Blumen [the flowers], so going into the mix sessions we kind of felt like it was becoming our ‘Berlin record’, but in the end it retained the stamp of San Francisco and we liked Mazes title better anyway.” And ultimately, Mazes is a definably American record, recorded against the backdrop of the Johnson and Yamada’s move from the Californian coast to the heights of Colorado. “I think a lot of our music has something to do with the mythology of the road,” muses Moon Duo’s Sanae Yamada. And if Mazes is a quest, a journey through American landscape and music, Johnson concludes that its key is “finding one's place in the world; moving forward, and the different paths one takes moving through life, trying to reach various goals, literally moving; love; pain; change. Or just getting by, and making sense of things”.

Tracklisting:
A1. Seer
A2. Mazes
A3. Scars
A4. They are known colloquially as windflowers.

For over twenty years, Efterklang have been pushing the barriers of experimental, electronic, emotional chamber-pop. Announcing their sixth studio album Windflowers, their first for City Slang, the Danish trio of Mads Brauer, Rasmus Stolberg and Casper Clausen continue a creative journey that’s brought them closer together, even as their lives grow apart. Channelling the motifs of hope and change its namesake flora represents, the album sees their many years of collaboration and experimentation distilled into some of their finest and most direct
melodic moments to date.

With their ability to bring in guests and session musicians restricted, Efterklang had to challenge their usual creative process and accept their own limitations. Recorded over the course of five trips to residential studio Real Farm on the island of Møn, south of Copenhagen, the genesis of Windflowers was back to basics and became an exercise in putting their vast and dynamic experience to play. The album finds Casper singing in English again, for the most part. It’s rich and intimate, the sound of three friends finding each other at a time when the world around them felt unstable. The record is about existing, alone, together and in nature. It’s about reconnecting, and letting each other grow.

Efterklang’s constant innovation and openness for collaborating extends past the band’s core members and into the world of the listener. Now sharing new music through their Developed platform, fans are invited to collaborate and respond as they listen to the new tracks for the first time. Collaboration and community has always been the compass of Efterklang, and the group keeps looking for new ways to build a meaningful correspondence with their audience, to be inventive and inclusive. “We don’t want to play to people, we want to perform and make music with people,” Rasmus explains.

After all their years together, Mads, Casper and Rasmus share the real intimacy of family. A sprawling collective of Nashville musicians —eleven were credited on the sleeve of I Hope You’re Sitting Down / Jack’s Tulips, one of them apparently responsible for “open-end wrenches” —they’d named themselves after a sock puppet, inexplicably given their album two titles, and stuck a painting on the cover of a small, barefooted child holding a dog whose cock and balls are on proud display. Perhaps to counteract this bold depiction of canine masculinity, the inner sleeve offered a black-and-white shot of what the more refined sometimes call a “lady garden.” The back cover offered a painting detail of a wedding dress. So far, so weird.

Where Lambchop brought us was somewhere so singular and bewilderingly gripping that — to perhaps no one’s greater surprise than the band themselves, whose homeland remained baffled for quite some years to come — the album ended up in British music paper NME’s Top 50 Albums of the Year. In case anyone were to consider this an anomaly, France’s similarly influential Les Inrockuptibles placed it at number 25 on their own list. Not bad for a band who had gathered since the mid-1980s, once a week, purely for pleasure, in that smoky, dimly lit basement. Not bad, either, for a record whose sessions were initially only expected to produce enough material for a handful of 7 -inch singles. Disheveled yet tender, anarchic yet intricate, I Hope You’re Sitting Down / Jack’s Tulips instead provided the springboard for a career — still ongoing, despite repeated reinventions, and still compelled by stubbornly freakish, outlandish intentions — during which Lambchop’s ever-changing line-up has continued to confound expectations. Wagner, meanwhile, remains one of our most cryptic but crucial voices, an authentic poet of the magical banal. Sure, it was weird here, but it was wonderful, too. The announcement is accompanied by the release of the new single “All Being Fine”. Originally inspired by Smog and noisy, lo-fi 90s bands, the track pulls the listener in immediately with its upbeat on the outside, sinister on the inside atmospherics, coming across like the aural equivalent of the opening of David Lynch’s classic film “Blue Velvet” - the bloody finger lying in the lush green grass. The video’s sun-drenched visual, directed by Whittle, is a perfect pairing, showcasing the band at their best: enigmatic, mysterious, but blackly humorous with it.

“All Being Fine” sets the stall perfectly for the rest of I’m Not Sorry, I Was Just Being Me , drenched as it is in cinematic, often immersive and offbeam soundscapes, punctuated by lyrics that are darkly romantic and thrillingly sardonic in equal measures. Written and then recorded with additional musicians Ted White, Jake Lipiec, and Olly Gorman in just eight months, the LP is a bold, memorable, even startling document of a dream shared, an ambition fulfilled and a vision realized. I’m Not Sorry, I Was Just Being Me is a spectacular debut from the duo and a clear indication this is the beginning of a long, fruitful journey for King Hannah.

King Hannah make music that lives somewhere between the gorgeously meditative pop of Yo La Tengo and the beautiful drama of Sharon Van Etten, the latter of which gave them a cosign for their 2020 EP. The foundation of I’m Not Sorry, I Was Just Being Me lives in Merrick's, Raymond Carver-Esque realism-inspired lyrics. Formed in 2017, the duo met waiting tables in Liverpool. Having seen Merrick perform years before and being serendipitously assigned to show Whittle the ropes at the new job, he immediately pestered her to play music with him. A writing routine was formed leading to their debut EP Tell Me Your Mind And I’ll Tell You Mine, which garnered early attention from The Guardian, Under The Radar, Brooklyn Vegan, Stereogum and more.

TRACKLISTING
A1. Tracks somewhere between delusion of grandeur and a mountain of Soul. Again there are "Hall of Fame“ honored Megabands like Hall & Oates or Michael Nesmith (from The Monkees) placed next to a completely lost troubled genius like Jimmy Gray Hall, who only released three promo 7 inches in his short life, that we just rediscovered. But maybe because he wasn’t the one making the afterparty rules this time, the music on The Bible is more unpredictable than it’s ever been on a Lambchop record. Jazz careening into country, into disco, into funk, and back to country. After releasing his acclaimed mixtape Tagat last year, the follow-up Metal will drop on 23th September 2022 via City Slang. On his record, Zouj creates a hyperpop cosmos full of experimental and futuristic sounds that lose none of their catchiness. Both EPs will be released combined on vinyl.

Zouj spent his late teens and early twenties in Leipzig, mainly on tour with his hardcore bands, like his most recent group Lingua Nada. That meant cheap rent and lots of time to devote to music and being constantly on the road. Just like Björk decided at some point that it was time to stop living the punk life of the Sugarcubes, Zouj also broke away from the group and turned from guitar music to an experimental, electronic sound. "After four years with my band, punk rock and basements, I wanted to do something different. At first I thought I'd open a bar, but then it became a mixtape. " Metal marks the release of the second EP from his solo project. A professional bassist, Adam Abdelkader Lenox also recently toured in the live band of Antilopen Gang and performed with Zouj as a support act for ÄTNA.

What if Earth, Wind and Fire's "September" wasn't a call to remember a sexy and romantic late summer - but to please delete all the accumulated data on one’s social media channels after death? Paired with a funky bassline and the spacey electronica sound of Daft Punk radio hits, we're getting closer to Zouj's "Delete After Death”, as he raises a question that should definitely be considered in times of all-encompassing digitalization: what happens to all my data when I die? "Move all my data to the bin. Cause I wanna be forgotten." And is there a right to a digital death? "Online I discovered a tattoo store called ‘Delete After Death’ and thought to myself, that's smart. Delete what? Sure, all the data. And then I looked at my Facebook profile again and thought, ‘Bad.’"

"Driving With My Eyes Closed" was created in collaboration with multi-instrumentalist, rapper, singer and dancer Sahareya. Both artists met at an art residency in Vienna and the Ljubliana artist is now a permanent part of the Zouj live band. "The song is a reminder that no one has a plan of what exactly you are doing here. Not your parents, not your grandparents. But everybody's still doing their best." Fluid sounds like synthetic water run through the song. A bass hits. And Sahareya's rap part is accompanied by beats reminiscent of Missy Elliott’s "Get Your Freak On".

Zouj's songs create a sonic world that sound both strangely menacing and danceable at the same - dystopian sounds that fit equally in a glitchy video game or adult cartoon as well as in a club. "With 'Driving With My Eyes Closed,' I wanted to find out what rubber might sound like. There's a lot of bass paired with jumpy synths. Everything sounds a little 'wobbly'." But Zouj's sound also feeds off an interest in the dark and weirder corners of the internet, from which he draws ideas: "Sometimes I just think of dank memes."

"Metal", the title track of the album, was born from the idea of creating a song that would sound like a robot. The process was all about approaching metallic sounds. "The EP is full of such hints," says Zouj. At the same time, accompanied by vocoder-distorted vocals and crooked guitars, the track unfolds as a gentle anthem of love. “Metal” becomes a metaphor of inner walls raised: "Armed to my teeth. Under my shields I ́m mortal. For your not to see the scar, I’m aiming for the heart first." Until the willingness to take off one's inner armor sets in. With "Anxious Sleep (Deep Dream Edit)," Zouj follows up his single of the same name from last year, which revolved around the state of sleep paralysis. "Sugar" and "Haram (Club Edit)" follow, two instrumentals that catapult the artist's sound into the setting of a club. In their original version, they ran as a soundtrack in a Nike campaign: For fashion designer All Amin aka Haramwithsugar's collaboration with Nike, Zouj provided the music for the fashion spot. "Bad News," on the other hand, approaches the '00s R'n'B sound of a Justin Timberlake - stripped down and put together in a much darker, futuristic style. While the lyrics take the oppressive feeling that a big city leaves behind to the extreme: "Oh man I'm so tired these days, I'm so tired. Dear god have you left the chat. There's only concrete looking over me. "

Throughout the music video for "One! " (produced by Julie Amouzegar Kim), a 3D avatar of the artist navigates through animated worlds that flicker with a melancholy for the early '00s era of video games. The character's journey to find perfect unity with himself fails: "Duality lives in all of us. Aren't we all always somewhere in between? And sometimes it's interesting to take a step back and let an avatar fight that out in a video." Zouj's visuals are characterized by the creative collaboration with artists from his environment. The cover is by Hamburg-based illustrator and animator Raman Djafari, who most recently animated a music video for Dua Lipa and Elton John. "I like to try different avatars of myself by different artists. By now, I have a collection of seven."

Metal EP feels like veering off the rainbow track in Mario Kart and suddenly glitching into the creepy mansion route. Wry synthetic sounds break out of the traditional song structure of pop, carving their own paths, yet ultimately never straying from catchiness. "I think the music doesn't want to be pop. Or it does want to be." Zouj's world is surreal and glitchy, experimental and glowing like a screen. Catchy and challenging. And, above all, fun as hell.

TRACKLISTING
Side A / Taget EP:

A1. o╮༼;´༎ຶ..̸̸̨̨۝ ༎ຶ༽╭o
A2.
