The world changed forever in the second quarter of 2020. The life we were used to ceased to be, as we were overcome by constant fear, distrust in all that surrounded us and a fatalist attitude towards the world we lived in. With the pandemic came lockdown, mandatory isolation for months, empty streets, face masks, hand sanitizer, the fear of going out, an absurd roll call of Covid fatalities, the daily tension of not knowing when it would all end and the urge to “get back to normal,” something that certainly never happened. Out of that pandemic saturation and that urge for “normality” came El Nido (“The Nest”), the third album by Italy-based Colombian producer Montoya, who describes this record as “becoming virgins of destiny again, facing up to that fatalist world and creating that longing for tranquility. Savoring that moment prior to the pandemic, that instant when the most important thing wasn’t the immediate reality or the global situation.” Montoya sees El Nido as that quiet place that you think of when you close your eyes; it is a beach or a mountain, a sunrise or a sunset, a wave in the sea refreshing your body, or an almost-whispering wind that immediately silences everything around you. On his previous records, Iwa in 2015 and Otún in 2019, his work as a producer prevailed, feeding the growing wave of Latin American electronica, fusing IDM and techno with indigenous root music, Andean folklore and rhythms from the tropical Caribbean coast and ancestral Pacific in terms of instrumentation. But on El Nido Montoya splits the balance, offering us five merely instrumental tracks and six collaborations with Latin American artists, including Colombians Nidia Góngora on “Soñé,” Montañera on “Sierra” and Pedrina on “Nubecita.” It also features Mexican artist Pahua on “Flor del Mar,” the Peruvian Lara Nuh on “El Faro” and the Franco-Venezuelan La Chica on “Palosanto.” Starting from the name itself (“The Nest”), an evocation of home, El Nido is also a Filipino municipality on the island of Palawan, a place that turned out to be Montoya’s last live experience before the pandemic. That place with crystal clear seas and white sand became the scene and starting point for this work, reflecting on the abstraction of a chaotic world and proposing blurred destinations with each song, like places that exist within memories when we close our eyes, letting us inhabit them, for a couple of minutes at least. Poison Dollys were an all-female heavy metal band, all aged between 19 and 22, that formed in the early 1980s on Long Island, NY. The band consisted of Roulette (Vocals), Gina Stile (Guitars), Gail Kenny (Drums) and Mef Manning (Bass Guitar). The band played the NY\/NJ club circuit heavily for years, starting by playing cover songs and then introducing their original tracks into their set. They were invited to record their self-titled album at Minot Sound in White Plains, NY in 1984. The album consisted of ten tracks (nine originals songs and “Love is for Suckers” which was written by a songwriter named Marky Carter. Their manager found the song and Marky agreed to let them do it and add it to the album). This song will be covered in 1987 by Twisted Sister. The album proved that these girls were serious musicians, capable of penning their own songs and delivering them to a high standard. The album got very good reviews, which allowed them to tour with Aerosmith, Autograph, Nazareth, Motorhead, Meatloaf and Foghat, and they played many of the most famous metal clubs of the era, most notably L’Amour in Brooklyn. (In fact, Lemmy requested that the band open for him on more than one occasion.) Guitarist Gina Stile departed from the band shortly after the recording, and was replaced by Laura Left, who joined the group in late 1986. The girls worked on new tracks with the then relatively unknown KIP WINGER, which included a cover version of “Great Balls of Fire” (also recorded at Minot Sound). They also appeared as themselves in the movie \"The Rejuvenator\". The tracks used in the movie were produced by David Brownstein at Minot Studio. There was a total of four tracks recorded during these sessions, two of which are used in the film. The band received tons of very good press and articles in all the major music magazines. They were the only band without a major record deal to grace the cover of “Kerrang!” magazine. The band moved to Los Angeles in early 1988. Gail Kenny returned to NY shortly thereafter and the band replaced her and also added a second guitarist named Danelle Kern. This way they built a sizeable following, which was enough for local label Broker Records to sign them. Strangely enough though, Broker only released the stuff the guys had written\/recorded on cassette, at the time a popular format in the States, because a lot of Americans used to listen to music on the road. Several thousand cassette tapes were sold and the band went out to play at some of L.A.’s clubs located in the infamous Sunset Strip. Sadly enough: when they started showcasing for various records labels, Nirvana and the likes began to take over the market and not a single record company was interested in DREAMS anymore. But because they still had that local following, the band went on until halfway the 90s before they really knew that there was no future for them. Unbelievable, because what you will listening is of such a huge quality! If this material had been released hallway the 80’s, DREAMS would have been a mega act! The music on this self-titled comprises 12 AOR pearls written in the period 1988-1991 that were only available as downloads before AOR Heaven released it on CD in 2013 though AOR Heaven Classix. This item was out of print very quickly and now it’s back with a second CD with 9 bonus tracks never released and a new cover artwork by the famous Mark Wilkinson (Marillion, Fish, Iron Maiden, Koritni, The Darkness).
