Kokoroko - Abusey Junction

A primer on London’s bright-burning young jazz scene, this new compilation brings together a collection of some of its sharpest talents. A set of nine newly-recorded tracks, We Out Here captures a moment where genre markers matter less than raw, focused energy. Looking at the album’s running order, it could easily serve as a name-checking exercise for some of London’s most-tipped and hardworking bands of the past couple of years. Recorded across three long, fruitful days in a North West London studio, the crossover between each of the groups speaks to the close-knit circles which make up the scene.

Surveying the way that London’s jazz-influenced music had spread outside of its usual spaces in recent years, this album bottles up some of the vital ideas emanating from that burgeoning movement. Giving a platform to a scene where mutual cooperation and a DIY spirit are second-nature, it’s a window into the wide-eyed future of London’s musical underground.

Ubiquitous, much-lauded saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings is the project’s musical director. His own recent projects span from South Africa-connected, spiritually-minded jazz players Shabaka and the Ancestors to Sons of Kemet, who match diasporically-connected compositions with viscerally-direct live shows. His entry on the album, ‘Black Skin, Black Masks’, is typically difficult-to-define: with an off-kilter, shifting rhythmic backbone, repeated phrases – mirrored between clarinet and bass clarinet – shape the track with an alluring hue. His input ties together a deft, genre-agnostic sensibility that’s shared through all the players on the record.

Theon Cross – who’s also part of Sons of Kemet with Hutchings – starts his track, ‘Brockley’, with the solo, distinctive low rumble of his tuba. Winding and mesmeric, it sees tuba and sax lines winding together in rhythmic and melodic parallels. Ezra Collective – whose drummer and bandleader Femi Koleoso has toured with Pharaohe Monch – run a tight, Afrobeat-tipped rhythm on ‘Pure Shade’, with the final third changing gear into a melodic, momentous closing stretch.

Joe Armon-Jones, whose ludicrous chops on the piano have seen him touring with the likes of Ata Kak, showcases earworm-like, insistent motifs on ‘Go See’, balanced with a playful, improvisatory approach with room for ad-libbing and solos a-plenty. Taking a softer tact than many of the other entries, Kokoroko – whose guitarist Oscar Jerome has been making waves with his solo material – spin a lyrical, steady-paced meditation on ‘Abusey Junction’, matching chanted vocals with gently-played guitar.

Nodding to spiritual jazz influences, Maisha’s ‘Inside The Acorn’ is a wandering, explorative rumination, balancing delicate washes of piano and percussion with sharp interplay between flute and bass clarinet. In contrast, Nubya Garcia’s ‘Once’ is taut and carefully-poised, her tenor sax guiding a carefully-built energy to an explosive conclusion. And finally, Triforce’s ‘Walls’ is a performance in two parts: starting with Mansur Brown’s languorous, lyrical guitar, the second half switches up to a low-slung, g-funk-tipped groove.

Format: CD
Catalogue No.: DAIS155CD
Barcode: 011586670891
Release Date: 27th November 2020
Genre: Experimental/Electronic

TRACKLISTING:
1. Dreamer is Still Asleep

Few groups in recent history forged as confounding and alchemical a body of work as Coil, the partnership of Peter 'Sleazy' Christopherson and John Balance. From album to album and phase to phase their recordings spelunk perplexing depths of esoteric industrial, occult electronics, and drugged poetry, both embodying and alienating parallel currents of their peers. The late 1990's in particular were a fertile era for the duo, embracing chance, chaos, and collaboration, enhanced by recent advancements in synthesis and sampling. Fittingly, at the summit of the decade's long, intoxicated arc, their divergent strains of interstitial ritual congealed into one of Coil's most celebrated and hallucinatory creations: Musick To Play In The Dark.

Convening at Balance and Christopherson's vast Victorian house / studio in the coastal town of Weston-super-Mare, they began a series of ambitious sessions aided by inner circle associates Thighpaulsandra and Drew McDowall. Although the creative process was admittedly “iterative” and “a bit of a drug blur,” the results are astoundingly inventive and well realized, winding through shades of divination dirge, wormhole kosmische, noir lounge, ominous humor, and black mass downtempo, guided by Balance's cryptic lunar muse, which he announces on the opening track: “This is moon musick / in the light of the moon.”

What's most remarkable about the album 20 years after its release is how brazen, insular, and unpredictable it still feels. The songs follow an allusive, altered state logic all their own, warping from microscopic ripples of glitch and breath to widescreen warlock psychedelia and back again, as much hyper-sensory as interdimensional. Even within a catalog as eclectic as Coil's, Musick is a mystifying collection, oneiric evocations of desire, decadence, dinner jazz, and dietary advice, far beyond the pale of whatever gothic industrial ambiguity birthed such a journey. The record closes with a slow, starlit shuffle, bathed in seething sweeps of spectral texture and high cathedral keys, like approaching the altar of some arcane temple. As the trance thickens Balance's voice rises, processed into an increasingly eerie, gaseous haze, but he resists these unseen forces, intent on delivering a final sermon: “Through hissy mists of history / the dreamer is still dreaming / the dreamer is still dreaming.”

• Reissued for the first time in over 20 years, for the first time on double LP with the original, unedited tracks in vinyl format.
• Completely remastered and restored audio and artwork.
• Side D of the double LP includes vinyl etching art: pine tree branches rendered by the band in Bryce software in the 90s for the original album art.

OTHER ACTIVITY: https://www.daisrecords.com/

Format: LP, Coke bottle clear LP
Catalogue No.: SBR3037LPC4
Barcode: 0843563139769
Release Date: 30 Jun 2023
Genre: Rock

TRACKLISTING:
1. Gray clouds were starting to form and in the unlikely city of Hamburg, a brazen and haunting gang of five women formed Xmal Deutschland. As any true punk would, Xmal Deutschland’s members Caro May, Rita Simon, Manuela Rickers, Fiona Sangster and Anja Huwe, started the band despite any previous musical experience.

The “Schwarze Welt” seven-inch was released on the local punk label, ZickZack, in 1981 and introduced the band as an unsettling swarm of intensity. There’s an urgency in its repetitive dirge, a swirling mania that persists on the b-side with “Die Wolken” and “Großstadtindianer” whose crude synthesizer noises escalate in tension. Most of all, Huwe’s uniquely venomous German vocals quickly became embedded in the unbridled and burgeoning scene of glamorous gloom.

Punk’s independence from the stiff grip of tradition allowed the band to find solace in anti-establishment art and music, far from the conventions of the past. With their peacocked hair and thick kohl-lined eyes, Xmal Deutschland’s music retained both a restlessness and delicacy, transcending any confines of the “Neue Deutsche Welle” movement (much like their colleagues and friends DAF and Einstürzende Neubauten) with the release of the “Incubus Succubus” single in 1982. It instantly became a post-punk classic. The guitar’s buzz ransacks through the melody as the ghoulish primitiveness of Huwe’s voice teases that maybe, just maybe, she is the nightmarish creature of which to be aware. The b-sides, “Zu Jung Zu Alt” and “Blut Ist Liebe,” keep strict militaristic dance beats as they teem in agitation.

That same year, the band performed in London as support for the Cocteau Twins; it was the platform they needed to ricochet into the arms of the ripped fishnet masses. Early Singles (1981-1982), is a map of the foundational movements of Xmal Deutschland, just seconds before takeoff. Bonus tracks on the compilation, “Kaellbermarsch” and a gritty live version of “Allein,” further accentuate their fusion of toughness with the quixotic decadence of atmospheric synthesizers. The band’s pursuit of something greater is palpable with this release, a reflection of a time that introduced accessibility to new means of making music following the onset of punk.

TRACKLISTING
1. Waiting For The Dawn

British-Bahraini trumpeter and composer Yazz Ahmed today announces her much-anticipated fourth studio album, A Paradise In The Hold, set for release on 28 February via her new label Night Time Stories.

A Paradise In The Hold is an album of yearning. It’s about Yazz’s dual heritage, drawing on traditional music and folklore as well as her own personal experience as a British-Bahraini woman. A sweeping epic where tradition meets innovation, she melds ancient rhythms with contemporary musicianship. The record is a tribute to the sorrowful songs of Bahrain’s pearl divers, the strength of Arab women, and the celebratory rhythms of women's traditional drumming circles, while also telling the story of Yazz’s own decade-long voyage of self-discovery.

On the album, Yazz says: “A thread in my work has been searching for, establishing, and now finally embracing and celebrating my cultural identity. I want to change the narrative about Arab women. So often, they are misrepresented as oppressed, but in Bahrain, there are many creative women forging new paths. I hope this album shines a light on that vibrancy and strength.”

The album also marks Yazz’s first foray into writing lyrics, in both English and Arabic, bringing a new dimension to her expansive sound. The project features an impressive roster of collaborators, including vocalists Natacha Atlas, Brigitte Beraha, and percussionist Corrina Silvester. An Ivor Novello Award-winning composer and one of the most innovative trumpet players of her generation, with A Paradise In The Hold, Yazz Ahmed delivers a groundbreaking fusion of tradition and innovation, creating a contemporary jazz project that is set to make a lasting impact on the genre.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0130/8714/6043/files/1_7e7ffd27-b30b-4847-91cf-1b10eb54cdb3.jpg?v=1743002332
yazz-ahmed-la-saboteuse-virgin-yellow-coloured-vinyl-2lp
Yazz Ahmed - La Saboteuse [Virgin yellow-coloured Vinyl 2LP]

Format: 2 x LP
Catalogue No.: ALNLP75W
Barcode: 5060391095097
Release Date: 02 May 2025
Genre: Jazz

limited edition 2 LP In Jacket Sleeve.

TRACKLIST:
A1 Maisha - Inside The Acorn
A2 Ezra Collective - Pure Shade
B1 Moses Boyd - The Balance
B2 Theon Cross - Brockley
C1. Things We Never Had

In the late-1990s, Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson moved with Jhonn Balance - his partner in life and in Coil - from London to the rural Weston-super-Mare, creating an environment for all things "musick, musick, musick!" with a revolving door of new members, including Thighpaulsandra. Coil's discography nearly doubled, and in the midst of this fruitful period Thighpaulsandra asked the simple question: why doesn't Coil play live? After a 16-year wait, thanks to the rapid technological advancement in the form of MacBooks, DAWs, VSTs and plugins, Coil were able bring their music to the stage as always envisioned. With performance, they could embrace the risks and freedoms of real time sonic manipulation, as noted by Sleazy: "Reshap(ing) the show minute by minute... the direction is very spontaneous, not so much in the way of like jazz improvisation but in a kind stream of consciousness… Thighpaulsandra brought us his wisdom, and he was able to convince us we could do it." Playing live, Coil was "like a snake shedding its skin," transforming into something "completely different" every six months; in preparing for 2004’s "Even an Evil Fatigue" live series, Coil began work on their next period-defining masterpiece Black Antlers.
Black Antlers showcases late-period Coil: stripped down, tighter, and leaner.

The music became more rhythmic, with a greater emphasis on beats: "the songs we did tend to be more... not rock in any sense of a word, but you know, more conventional in terms of structure, but now what we're doing is sort of within an 'electronic' genre." Black Antlers's sound is an intoxicating energy, combining Thighpaulsandra's advanced synthesis, Balance's poetic lyricism and Christopherson's flirtations with jazz and Ableton-aided PowerBook maximalism. Rounding out the trio were renowned hurdy-gurdy player Cliff Stapleton on a "specifically commissioned" electric variant, to merge into the band’s "strange and other-worldly music"; Royal Academy of Music trained percussionist Tom Edwards (who also appeared with Thighpaulsandra in Spiritualized’s live band); and European and Near East winds specialist Mike York on pipes, bombarde, duduk and balalaika. Initially released as an "album- in-progress" in June 2004, a post on the Threshold House website noted, "Please remember that September will see Coil recording the album "Black Antlers (Proper)"." Jhonn Balance passed away that November; Christopherson reunited with Love's Secret Domain collaborator Danny Hyde to complete Black Antlers by May 2006.

Revitalized energy marked Black Antlers's recording, paired with the group's signature wordplay and humor (the name came from a series of imagined adult film titles). At their "Evil Fatigue" tour opener in Paris, Jhonn Balance presented the revised "Teenage Lightning (10th Birthday Version)" as, "an updated version of one of our older-never 'hits.'" The song, about the energy generated by "two teenagers, or old age pensioners" rapidly pulses, with Edwards's marimbas electronically modified and arpeggiated by Christopherson. Album opener "The Gimp (Sometimes)" is hypnotic and hallucinatory, recalling Coil's 90s period, with a potentially uneasy air, filled with repetition, distorted vocals, and Thighpaulsandra's modulated drone. "Sex With Sun Ra (Part One)" reveals the potentials of the 2004 lineup, as it writhes and glides through an imagined conversation with the legendary composer, building into overdrive. On the complementary piece, Christopherson & Hyde's "Part Two - Sigillaricia", the song evolves into a throbbing ouroboros of glitches and free flowing energy. One highlight is "The Wraiths And Strays Of Paris", an expansion of the song's first release as "(From Montreal)". "Of Paris" takes Thighpaulsandra synthesized warmth and Christopherson's PowerBook manipulations & stylizations from the original, adding full band samples from live multi-tracks - including Balance's vocals from the Paris show - fully realizing Christopherson's desire of "taking the (electronic) genre to a place that people would find unexpected, and more challenging." Adding to the unexpected, and building upon their own uncompromising legacy, Coil delicately cover the traditional African American lullaby (and "friend's song") "All The Pretty Little Horses", with Balance's vocals soothing the listener in an almost hushed whisper.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0130/8714/6043/files/1_5624c6ab-dba4-47d6-a322-750e62929779.jpg?v=1747861023
to-rococo-rot-the-amateur-view-expanded-edition-2025-2lp
TO ROCOCO ROT - THE AMATEUR VIEW (EXPANDED EDITION 2025) [2LP]

Format: 2 x LP
Catalogue No.: SLANG50596LP
Barcode: 4250506851583
Release Date: 06 Jun 2025
Genre: Pop, Experimental

Disc 1
1 I Am the World With You
2 Telema
3 Prado
4 A Little Asphalt Here and There
5 This Sandy Piece
6 Tomorrow
7 Greenwich
8 Cars
9 She Loves Animals
10 Die Dinge Des Lebens

Disc 2
1 Set
2 Cars (Variant)
3 Meet the Lucky Kitten
4 Telema (Längs)
5 Rocket Fuel
6 Copa
7 Pantone 6
8 Numbers in Love
9 Casper
10 Milker
11 A Day Long
12 Pantone 1

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0130/8714/6043/files/2_860b3d57-f1ab-4471-b05d-c0bc33d28f50.jpg?v=1749580155
kara-lis-coverdale-a-series-of-actions-in-a-sphere-of-forever
Kara-Lis Coverdale - A Series of Actions in a Sphere of Forever

Format: LP
Catalogue No.: STS413LP
Barcode: 7072822413101
Release Date: 29 Aug 2025
Genre: Experimental/ Electronic

Side A:
1. Stripping away fictional narratives present on the artist’s last several album endeavours, A Danger to Ourselves arrives from a place of emotional sincerity. Sonically unravelling like a deeply personal conversation, Dalt’s voice is focal , supported by a lush array of acoustic orchestration and percussive instrumentation, and an esteemed cast of collaborators.

Dalt, born in Pereira, Colombia, was raised in a family of music enthusiasts who encouraged her to pick up a guitar when she was nine. Dalt followed this creative impulse, becoming fascinated with computer-based production and leaving a burgeoning career as a civil engineer, moving from Medellín to Barcelona and ultimately Berlin, where she developed her distinctive, adventurous sound. Her work has spun into increasingly accomplished terrains with Anticlines (2018) and No era sólida(2020), and notably,¡Ay!, Dalt’s 2022 breakthrough sci-fi bolero album. Along the way, Dalt expanded her practice into scoring for films like On Becoming a Guinea Fowl(2024), HBO series The Baby(2022), and the forthcoming psychological horror Rabbit Trap, while creating sound installations and performances that showcase her luminous modulations and distinctive, evolving vocal approach. A Danger to Ourselves emerged from fragmentary declarations Dalt scribbled while navigating life on tour for ¡ Ay!, and the formative moments of a new relationship. She began crystallising these intimate fragments into musical compositions in January 2024, giving gradual form to a purposeful constellation of songs. The album’s sonic architecture builds upon dynamic drum loops provided by collaboratorAlexLázaro, whose percussive backbone, as on¡Ay!, became a canvas for Dalt’s layered vocals. Rather than following conventional melodic structures, the album generates musicality through the interplay of basslines, rhythms, and compositional design. A Dangerto Ourselves reveals Dalt’s uncompromising quest for sonic clarity, where bold production choices and meticulous recording techniques encourage both voice and instrument to harmonise with newfound depth and radiance.

Distinctly anti-conceptual, A Danger to Ourselves is a poetic instinct by which Dalt ushers in an unobstructed focus on the music itself, using vocals that vibrate past the songs’ parameters, and observing the beaded echoes of primal, romantic thrill. lucid attention to detail is palpable in every measure ,a dedication that spins in concentric circles, forming a field that unifies the personal and ethereal. Drawn from intuitive experiments, the album uses simple gestures and intricate compositions to weave wandering lines, as in “divina,” which moves between Spanish and English through elastic soundscapes and mesmerising auditory collage.

TRACKLIST:
A1. cosa rara (ft. david sylvian)
A2. amorcito caradura
A3. no death no danger
A4. caes (ft. camille mandoki)
A5. agüita con sal
A6. hasta el final
A7. divina

B1. acéphale
B2. mala sangre
B3. the common reader (ft. juana molina)
B4. stelliformia
B5. el exceso según cs
B6. covenstead blues

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0130/8714/6043/files/1_6b72dd1f-6fc8-4fd6-8ea1-909dffd42799.jpg?v=1753980873
leifur-james-a-louder-silence
LEIFUR JAMES - A LOUDER SILENCE

Format: LP
Catalogue No.: ALNLP53
Barcode: 5060391091815
Release Date: 05 Oct 2018
Genre: Jazz

Alpine
Time
Suns of Gold
Argonaut
Mumma Don't Tell
Uncle Blue
Night and Day
Salaninam
Red Sea
Osho

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0130/8714/6043/files/1_861a7802-3298-4feb-aa79-a8f17e26d976.webp?v=1758701597
