Having decided that the psychedelia of 1967’s Their Satanic Majesties Request was not a good look, Keith Richards went back to his roots for the highly acoustic Beggars Banquet LP. Lead track Sympathy For The Devil made its world debut on David Frost’s primetime TV programme to a mixed reaction. It was the last time that Brian Jones would be seen on stage with the Stones: he can be glimpsed playing keyboards, and percussion on the opening verses. When the Stones recorded You Can’t Always Get What You Want and Honky Tonk Women for Frost the following year Jones was gone, replaced by Mick Taylor. The entire episode was devoted to British acts and included on the bill were Sandie Shaw, PJ Proby, The Karl Denver Trio, Tommy Quickly, Sounds Incorporated and Lyn Cornell. The show features the first ever live performance of I'm A Loser; it was broadcast in the states by ABC on 7th October 1964, but strangely enough, was never shown in Britain. Producer Peter Pilbeam booked them in for a slot on Teenagers Turn, which was recorded in front of a live audience and transmitted nationally the following day on BBC’s Light Programme. They returned to the same venue for their second BBC session on Whit Monday, June 11th; this would be the last to feature their original drummer, Pete Best. A coach full of fans accompanied them from Liverpool for the occasion. Before their third appearance on Teenagers Turn, the Beatles had made their debut TV appearance, also in Manchester, for Granada’s People And Places. They had a new single to promote and duly performed both sides, Love Me Do and P.S. I Love You on the show that was aired on October 26th. The group can also be heard here singing songs recorded at the Cavern, notably a version of Some Other Guy that was broadcast on Granada TV in 1963. The Sandy Linzer/Denny Randell songwriting/production team crafted stomping, four-to-the-floor Motown-style productions on the hits “Let's Hang On” and “Working My Way Back To You” with the legendary Buddy Salzman creating the distinctive drum sound. Later in 1966, Bob Gaudio came up with an arrangement of Cole Porter’s “I've Got You Under My Skin” that made the song sound just like a Four Seasons track with its killer hook coda “Never win, never win” added at the insistence of producer Bob Crewe. Frankie Valli began his solo recording career by insisting that his composers provide material that did not require him to use falsetto and his first release was the Bob Crewe/Charlie Calello composition “(You're Gonna) Hurt Yourself”. “Can't Take My Eyes Off You” was Valli’s first number one (Cashbox May 1967), despite Philips having mothballed the finished record for almost a year because they feared it might break the group up. We feature here two live versions of Frankie’s Christmas 1967 single “To Give”, both with full orchestral backing. For a live broadcast on NBC’s Kraft Music Hall show in July 1968, the Four Seasons previewed "Saturday's Father", a track to be released on the 1969 psychedelic concept album Genuine Imitation Life Gazette. This LP also includes as a bonus track a hits medley from a 1971 transmission from BBC’s Top Of The Pops.

Side One. 1. Hurt Yourself 2. Working My Way Back To You 3. Around him he had gathered four younger, more adventurous jazzmen, all wishing to push the envelope of the music. This session captures a moment that, without any hint of sleeve note hyperbole, can rightly be called historic. That moment is the April 19th 1965 debut within the Rendell/Carr ranks of pianist Michael Garrick, a musician who was - again with no little sense of overstatement - to quite literally change the course of the group’s direction, and it can be argued with some conviction, that of the wider sound of British jazz. At the first Dutch show in Blokker, the radio broadcaster elected to place their microphones out front of stage and the over-enthusiastic crowd singing along almost drowns out the Beatles vocals. When they arrived to perform for their TV appearance at Treslong, the group were informed that they would be required to sing live vocals over a playback tape, the only time the group played like this. This LP gives us the opportunity to compare Ringo’s drumming style to that of his temporary replacement, Jimmy Nicol. The only other extant concert recording with Nicol on drums is the Adelaide Centennial Hall show six days later, when there was no microphone on the kit. This excellent-sounding recording was for broadcast on Swedish TV but neither Ringo’s nor John’s stage mic was working, so all you can hear is what came through Paul’s mic. George and Paul’s vocals, the bass and George's guitar amp come through loud and clear, but the drums and John’s rhythm guitar sound distant. It does mean you have to make do with just the backing vocals on You Can’t Do That and I Wanna Be Your Man. And that was the last the number they played in the evening concert because fans stormed the stage and the group had to stop the show. The LP also includes several live tracks from earlier in 1964, the highlight being a four-minute medley of all five of their UK hit singles from 1962 and 1963, two of which, Love Me Do and Please Please Me they would never play on stage again.

Side One 1.
